What is the programme about?

The Master's degree programme "Interprofessional Management in Health Care" (IPMG) is designed to enable you to act as a manager in the interprofessional context of health care in different settings in a theory-based manner. You will develop the skills to analyse, plan and control joint action in health care with respect to civil society, socially relevant and cultural requirements and develop the ability for participative leadership. In the degree programme, an optimal connection is created between previously acquired professional practice and academic expertise.

With the degree programme you will learn to…

  • Use management methods and tools adequately
  • Make decisions in consideration of the different professional perspectives and implement them in an interprofessional context
  • Strengthen interprofessional cooperation in organisations in order to develop and use synergies to cope with complex requirements
  • Make theoretically sound decisions and assume responsibility, e.g. regarding therapies, concepts or even (new) acquisitions
  • Derive processes from decisions in terms of practice transfer and control them in the field of activity
  • Reflect on issues from different perspectives, communicate appropriately to the target group

… as well as on the basis of a solid scientific education

  • Identify research needs
  • Formulate or address research questions and work on them systematically (e.g. by participating in research projects and/or in independent further academic work (doctorate).

Who is the programme suitable for?

The degree programme is suitable for you if you are a graduate of a Bachelor's degree programme with a focus on areas of health or care management. Additionally, you must be able to provide evidence of at least 6 months of professional practice in the health care sector, or if you have a Bachelor's degree in economics you must be able to provide evidence of at least 12 months of professional practice in the health care sector. You critically reflect on health care issues and look for science-based solutions. You want to expand your skills and competences accordingly in order to be able to take responsibility for these solutions in a balanced way with different stakeholders in healthcare.

What are the admission requirements?

What are the admission requirements?

Admission requirements (excerpt from PO, § 2):

  • Bachelor's degree in a degree programme with a focus on health or nursing management or in a health science degree programme with a grade point average of 2.5 or better.

  • Proof of at least 80 ECTS credits in management-related content and at least 20 ECTS credits in scientific methods (e.g. qualitative and quantitative research methods) at Bachelor level.

  • Has at least 6 months of practical work experience in a health care institution OR has completed a degree in economics with a grade point average of 2.5 or better and has at least 12 months of relevant practical work experience in a health care institution.

  • (1) Those who have obtained a corresponding degree with a grade point average of less than 2.5 and can prove at least three years of relevant professional experience in a health care institution after graduation may be admitted. The prerequisite for this is that in a specialist discussion with a member of the examination board with a doctorate and another member of the teaching staff of the degree programme, it can be proven beyond doubt that the aptitude for scientific work in a research-oriented Master's degree programme is given. Admission to the expert interview must be applied for separately to the examination committee, together with the submission of all application documents.

What career opportunities are there after graduation?

Following a high level and successful Master's degree, you may be able to complete a doctorate in Public Health at Fulda University of Applied Sciences as a junior researcher. Alternatively, you can take on responsible tasks at management level in a health organisation, especially if you already have experience in the respective professional field. Potential employers are, in particular, clinics, care facilities, outpatient care facilities, MVZs, care support centres, medical service of the health insurance funds, health insurance funds, research facilities, research projects and consulting firms.

Fields of activity are, for example (depending on professional experience and individual profile):

  • Management of a facility or assistant to the management or nursing administration

  • Nursing department or ward manager

  • Head of department/division

  • Project management

  • Management of MVZs/management of interprofessional care structures

  • Treatment transfer/patient management/case management

  • Fields of application in the functional areas of management of health care organisations such as personnel, quality and/or risk management, (medical) controlling, administration and organisational development.

What awaits you in the degree programme?

In the core subject area "Management and leadership of interprofessional teams", your social competences, your personality development, and your multidimensional decision-making ability in complex situations are strengthened. This is achieved in a discourse-oriented and open communication culture in an interprofessional context. The courses "Leadership and communication in an interprofessional context" and "Decision-making in interprofessional teams I and II" are part of this core area.

In the core subject area "Management of interprofessional health care", you will explore the legal framework conditions that significantly influence decisions in the health care system in greater depth with "Health law". In order to be able to coordinate and control interprofessional action in organisations, "profession-coordinating controlling" is necessary. Furthermore, the special features of "cooperative management" in the interprofessional context in organisations that are becoming larger and more complex with diverse sectoral and interprofessional interfaces are highlighted. Management in health care is shaped by "health system design", which is why a corresponding understanding of this must be established. A strong influencing factor for management in the interprofessional context is "human-technology innovation". Digitalisation in particular, through which the conditions of interdisciplinary cooperation are influenced, plays a significant role here. Furthermore, you can sharpen your profile with an elective module. This elective module promotes and develops your awareness of social contexts in which management action in the healthcare sector is embedded (modules can be e.g.: Ageing in Europe; Ethical aspects in interprofessional decision-making in health care organisations; Health promotion; Normative and strategic management; Sociology of health; Participation in health).

In the third core subject area, your research skills are expanded and deepened. The basis is the course "Research methods", which also deals with statistical tools. The two-semester long "Research project" starts in the second semester. In this way, a cross-professional, patient-centred view of problems in interprofessional health care and the transfer into practice is achieved at a high scientific and theoretically sound level. You can thus work on the development of solution approaches for the management of interprofessional health care. Your Master's thesis will conclude the programme.

A semester abroad is possible from the second semester onwards.

The IPMG degree programme concludes with the Master of Science (M.Sc.).
