What Is It All About?

Providing nursing care to people of all ages who need assistance, either due to physical or mental diseases or disabilities, either temporarily or permanently, is a highly complex, responsible, and varied task, that requires professional training.
Worldwide, and also in most European countries, nursing has become a profession that requires academic training in addition to meet the ever increasing demands of the field. We have been offering an undergraduate programme in nursing for more than 20 years and are experts in academic training in the field.
It is important to us to teach you from the beginning, how you can find your own answers to practical questions using academic methods, gathering existing data and knowledge in a systematic manner. We aim to prepare you for a career of providing professional and high quality care to people who are in need of nursing. After graduation, you will have acquired the relevant skills for the profession and will be able to work confidently, independently, and efficiently, while critically appraising and academically justifying your actions.
Furthermore, it is important to us that your Bachelor's degree will allow you to choose to continue your academic training by pursuing a Master's or a doctoral degree later on.

This Programme Is for You If...

• You have completed your entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or university entrance qualification.
• You want to care for people with nursing needs, and you hold responsible behaviour in high esteem.
• You want to ground your actions in scientific, academic knowledge, but also want to practice nursing.
• You understand the central importance of communication and interaction with others, and if you are interested in contributing to the varied tasks in nursing.
• You have completed vocational training in a nursing profession and want to pursue an academic degree to further your education

We recommend a six week prior internship in nursing.

After Graduation

Nursing is a highly diverse profession. For example, your academic degree and state examination will allow you to work in

• Out-patient and in-patient nursing in preventive, curative, rehabilitative, or palliative areas of the health system
• Nursing-related consulting for patients and their families
• Designing the living conditions for people in need of nursing care
• Caring for healthy and sick children and adults
• Quality assurance departments of nursing in hospitals and out-patient or in-patient nursing institutions
• Individual and systemic case management
• Conceptualising, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing-related projects
• Publishing, in patient support and advocacy organisations, or in public health services

If you complete a Master's degree, you will be able to work in teaching, management, or nursing research.

How Is the Programme Structured?

Over the course of only four years, you will earn two degrees: Over the course of only four years, you will earn two degrees: After four years, you will have completed your Bachelor of Science degree, and upon passing the integrated state examination you will receive your professional license as a nursing specialist. 
Contents of the study programme: Thanks to the dual nature of the programme, theoretical and practical training are tightly interwoven.
You will gain:

• An understanding of nursing theory necessary to assess the individual needs of persons in need of long-term care, and to plan and implement interventions.
• Practical nursing skills, which you will acquire in skills trainings and simulated complex nursing situations in our state-of-the art labs.
• The ability to conduct academic research to justify the need for specific interventions, and in order to assess their effects.
• Medical and scientific knowledge that allows you to assess and evaluate a patient’s health status.
• An understanding of political, legal, and economic relationships that will allow you to recognise the basic conditions of nursing and to contribute to the development of concepts of care.

All throughout your studies, you will be closely advised so that you will be able to combine and further develop your theoretical and methodological knowledge during the practical periods, study projects, and in research and development projects.
Practical training: During the programme you will complete practical trainings of 4 to 6 weeks at university hospitals and teaching institutions of Fulda University of Applied Sciences or with our partner institutions in Germany and abroad.

Simulation and Skills Labs in Nursing

Skills trainings and simulations are an integral part of the modules of all semesters.
Simulations aim to systematically build subject-specific, methodological, social, and individual skills in students. At the same time, they teach students that patient security is of the highest priority in real-life nursing situations. Patient safety always comes first with us. Students are enabled to study complex nursing activities without feeling threatened, and learning is enhanced, because students can control and organise their own learning in a safe and protected environment.
In simulations, the “real world” is re-created. Simulations are a teaching and learning method that copies real living conditions (in nursing training, these will be nursing situations) as closely as possible. Teaching and learning situations in simulations are close to real-life nursing practices as possible.
Learning through simulation in nursing includes:

• Skills and task trainers, such as I.V. Injection arms, to learn practical skills
• Low-tech to high-tech simulators (manikins) offering a high level of possibilities for interactions and realistic situations (Jeffries 2007) Scenarios of complex nursing situations that are developed specifically for clinical exercises in the lab
• Computer-based virtual trainings and “standardised patients” (actors) for simulating history taking and assessments
