The Department of Nursing and Health Science at the Fulda University of Applied Science offers a practical approach to learning with the firm foundation of theoretical expertise. It does so by facilitating student-driven learning. I consider this of great importance because team-work, proactiveness and confident decision-making are key components in the field of health sciences. My experience studying here has greatly helped me to develop such skills. The classes are tailored to cover relevant and current health topics not only facing Germany, but also offering a perspective on International and Global Health challenges and achievements. Despite this vast pool of information, the learning is very well organised with the help of dedicated lecturers and other members of staff. The lecturers provide a conducive atmosphere for open classroom discussions and are always available for consultation.
As an international student, the desire to achieve my highest potential while still being able to cope with living abroad was always a great concern. Would I fit in with the new culture? How long will it take to learn German? Would there be enough support for international students? Will it provide me with more opportunities for future employment? These are just but a few worries that I, and possibly many other students, had. Fulda University made the transition from my country to the German system very manageable. The International Office keeps contact with prospective students even before arrival and assists on several issues including accommodation. Upon arrival, international students have the unique opportunity to get involved in activities, regardless of their level of German knowledge. Such activities include: sports, city tours, picnics, student council meetings, scientific seminars, workshops and for those with an adventurous spirit, there are trips to the Rhön Mountains where one can enjoy the beautiful nature. Apart from helping international students to feel comfortable, there are also scholarship opportunities and student jobs for those in need of financial assistance. What makes this university even more internationally oriented, is that, some courses are offered in English and the student has an option of studying German at the university language centre without any additional fees, as long as they are enrolled. All in all, the Fulda University of Applied Sciences is a great institution of learning and a sure foundation for a career.
