Offerings for Students

Academic writing is rarely taught and learned in school - and learning how to write well usually remains a life-long process. To be sure, academic writing and the kind of methodical and creative thinking required in research isn't entirely different from writing and thinking in our everyday lives. However, novice university students will still need to spend considerable time to familiarize themselves with strategies and conventions that might seem alien and strange at first. In fact, research has shown that students who realize that they might have to learn some entirely new things about writing tend to become better academic writers than students who've been good writers at school and don't see the need to change anything.

To make the transition from school to writing at university - and eventually, at the workplace - easier, the Writing Lab offers different types of support:

  • Writing consultations by student writing consultants and Writing Lab staff;
  • Support for writing groups;
  • Workshops and occasional courses on different writing-related issues;
  • Events such as the SchreibNight or the SchreibDates and
  • a training for peer writing tutors.
