MOTIVATING COMMUNICATION - AT EYE LEVEL WITH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE.

A recognised concept for supporting motivation and initiating change - even among young people.

 

In this continuing education programme, child and youth welfare professionals learn the basics
and methods of motivational interviewing. The focus is on the design
of conversations that help children, young people and families to develop motivation for change
. This practice-oriented continuing education programme teaches key techniques and
strategies for successfully shaping communication processes when working with young people, their families
and other professionals and for dealing with resistance in a professional manner.

It emphasises a basic attitude of openness, a willingness to collaborate with both parents and young people as equals and a cooperative way of working. This continuing education programme offers an insight into and an approach to the Motivational Interviewing method. It teaches selected central techniques from the broad spectrum of this method and enables participants to use initial approaches in their practice.

Social education worker & Master "Psychosocial Counselling and Therapy" (Fulda University of Applied Sciences).

The continuing education programme is part-time and takes place over a period of 2 months.

In total, the continuing education comprises 2 attendance days (totalling 16 units) at Fulda University of Applied Sciences and 2 online video training sessions (totalling 4 units) as well as self-study phases between the courses with a learning effort of approx. 12 units.

1. Teil: Grundlagen Motivierender Gesprächsführung
 

Termin:
2 Präsenztage in Fulda (09:00 - 16:30 Uhr)

Themenfelder:

  • Grundlagen Motivierende Gesprächsführung (MI-Spirit, Prozesse, Kernkompetenzen)
  • Sozialpsychologische Erkenntnisse und Techniken zur Gestaltung gelingender Interaktion, Kommunikation und Motivation sowie zur Förderung des Veränderungswillens, inkl. der Besonderheiten der Kommunikation mit Kindern und Jugendlichen
  • MI Basistechniken (OARS) zur Gestaltung von professionellen Gesprächen (mit Familien, Kindern/ Jugendlichen und im interdisziplinären Austausch)
  • Einführung in die Bereiche Ambivalenz erzeugen und Umgang mit Widerstand
  • Vorbereitung Video-Training

 

2. Teil: Feedback zum eigenen Beratungsverhalten


Termin:
Nach ca. 4 Wochen: 1,5 Stunden via Webex (wochentags ab 18:00 Uhr)

3. Teil: Zuversicht stärken (Confidence-Talk)


Termin:
Ca. 2 Wochen nach dem Video-Training: 1,5 Stunden via Webex (wochentags ab 18:00 Uhr)

This continuing education programme is aimed specifically at professionals who work in child and youth welfare and regularly manage challenging conversations with children, young people, families and other professionals.
It is ideal for you if you:

  • Want to support motivation and willingness to change in conversations, especially with young people and their families,
  • want to learn techniques and strategies for dealing professionally with resistance and ambivalence,
  • work with different professionals in an interdisciplinary context,
  • address sensitive topics and critical aspects and have to act in conflict situations.

It is an advantage if you already have several years of professional experience in child and youth welfare. A pass background in counselling techniques or conversation facilitates the implementation of the practice-oriented content.

After completing the degree in Motivational Interviewing in the context of child and youth welfare and successfully attending a final oral examination (20-30 minute discussion of typical MI case situations), participants receive a university certificate (1 ECTS).
