English language requirements

For study programmes that require advanced English skills in accordance with their study and examination regulations, applicants must provide evidence of this by submitting the following recognised language certificates. If only levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) are specified there, only the evidence listed below will be accepted. If certain evidence is explicitly listed in the university studies and examination regulations, only these apply.

IMPORTANT: The language certificates must be submitted at the latest with the enrolment and must not be older than three years at the time of submission. The deadline begins with the expiry of the year of issue. Other language certificates (e.g. Duolingo) are not accepted.

Language level A1:

  • TOEFL iBT with 9 points or better
  • TOEFL ITP Level 1 with 343 points or better
  • IELTS Academic with 2.0 or better
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment with A2 Key Level A1 or better
  • TOEIC with a Listening and Reading Test of 120 points or better, Speaking Test of 50 points or better, Writing Test of 30 points or better,
  • Bridge Test of 92 points or better

Language level A2:

  • TOEFL iBT with 30 points or better
  • TOEFL ITP Level 1 with 343 points or better
  • IELTS Academic with 3.0 or better
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment with A2 Key
  • Level B, C or better
  • TOEIC with a Listening and Reading Test of 225 points or better, Speaking Test of 90 points or better, Writing Test of 70 points or better,
  • Bridge Test of 137 points or better

Language level B1:

  • TOEFL iBT with 43 points or better
  • TOEFL ITP Level 1 with 433 points or better
  • IELTS Academic with 4.0 or better
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment with B1 Preliminary grade B, C or better or A2 Key grade A or better
  • TOEIC with a Listening and Reading Test of 550 points or better, Speaking Test of 120 points or better, Writing Test of 120 points or better, Bridge Test of 170 points or better

Language level B2:

  • TOEFL iBT with 72 points or better
  • TOEFL ITP Level 1 with 543 points or better
  • IELTS Academic with 5.5 or better
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment with B2 Firsts grade B, C or better or B1 Preliminary grade A or better
  • (v) TOEIC with a Listening and Reading Test of 785 points or better, Speaking Test of 160 points or better, Writing Test of 150 points or better

Language level C1:

  • TOEFL iBT with 95 points or better
  • TOEFL ITP Level 1 with 620 points or better
  • IELTS Academic with 7.0 or better
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment with C1 Advanced grade B, C or better or B2 First grade A or better
  • TOEIC with a Listening and Reading Test of 945 points or better, Speaking Test of 180 points or better, Writing Test of 180 points or better

Language level C2:

  • TOEFL iBT with 114 points or better
  • IELTS Academic with 8.0 or better
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment with C2 Proficiency grade A, B, C or better or C1 Advanced grade A or better

Exempt from providing proof:
Applicants who have completed their entrance qualifications or a degree at an English-speaking institution are exempt from the English language requirement. This also applies to those whose Abitur certificate explicitly states the required level of proficiency.
