German language requirements

For study programmes that require advanced German skills in accordance with their study and examination regulations, applicants must provide evidence of this. Evidence is provided in accordance with the Framework Regulations for German Language Examinations at Universities (RO-DT) by submitting the following recognised language certificates:

IMPORTANT: The language certificates must not be older than three years at the time of submission. The deadline begins with the expiry of the year of issue

One level lower is sufficient for the application and admission. The level required by the study and examination regulations must then be demonstrated by the time of enrolment at the latest.

EXCEPTION: For the two master's programmes, Data Science and Global Software Development, the required knowledge of German must already be presented at the time of application.

Language level A1:

  • German language examination for university admission
  • DSH-1 or better
  • TestDaF at least 4x3
  • Final assessment test of a preparatory course with a passed German section
  • German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs DSD-1 or better
  • Goethe-Zertifikat A1 or better
  • ÖSD certificate A1 or better
  • Telc-Zertifikat Start Deutsch 1/ telc Deutsch A1 or better

Language level A2:

  • German language test for admission to university (DSH-1) or better
  • Test DaF at least 4x3
  • Final assessment test of a preparatory course with a passed German section
  • German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs DSD-1 or better
  • Goethe-Zertifikat A2 or better
  • ÖSD certificate A2 or better
  • Telc-Zertifikat Start Deutsch 2/ telc Deutsch A2 or better

Language level B1:

  • German language test for admission to university (DSH) 1 or better
  • TestDaF at least 4x3
  • Final assessment test of a preparatory course with a passed German section

  • Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or better

Language level B2:

Level C1:

  • Final assessment test of a preparatory course with a passed German section
  • German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs
  • DSD-2 or better
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or better
  • ÖSD certificate C2 or better
  • Telc Certificate C1 University

Level C2:

  • German language test for admission to university (DSH-3)
  • TestDaF at least 4x5
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2
  • Telc Certificate German C2

If you can provide evidence of the following qualifications, you are released from the requirement to provide evidence of German language skills:

  • University entrance qualification from a German-speaking facility
  • School-leaving certificate from Austria, German-speaking Switzerland or Liechtenstein that is equal to the German general university entrance qualification (Abitur)
  • Foreign transcript of records published in "Access of foreign applicants with foreign educational qualifications to university studies at German universities: Evidence of German language skills (Resolution of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of 2 June 1995, as amended)" under point 3 (4th indent).
