Taking up a second degree

Bachelor's degree second degree programme

You are only considered a second degree applicant if you are applying for a Bachelor's programme with restricted admission(s) and have already obtained a first degree at the time of application. You must provide the relevant information in the application portal. Please note that in addition to evidence of your first degree, you must also submit a letter of motivation stating the reasons for your desired second degree.

If you have not yet completed your first Bachelor's programme at the time you submit your application, you are not considered a second degree applicant, even if you are about to graduate.

If you are applying for an open admission Bachelor's programme (admission types "open admission" and "individual decision after examination"), it is not relevant for either the application or the admission decision whether you have already completed your first degree. However, you must provide this information for statistical purposes during matriculation and upload evidence of this.

Second degree Master's programme

When applying for a Master's degree - regardless of the study programme or admission type - it is not relevant whether you already have a first Master's degree. There is therefore no second degree application. Although you must provide the relevant information at the latest at the time of matriculation, this is for statistical purposes only.

How does the application for second degree applicants work?

Like all other applicants, please apply directly via our internal application portal horstl or via uni-assist, depending on the origin of the educational certificates. When applying for a Bachelor's programme with restricted admission, additional questions must be answered and further documents uploaded. The decision will be made shortly after the closing date for applications.

What documents/evidence must be submitted in addition to the online application?

  • A scan of your first degree graduation certificate. The transcript of records must show the grade with which you terminated your first degree.
  • A detailed written justification for your second degree programme (if possible, including details of your previous training, professional training and your intended appointment).

When is the decision made?

Decisions are made in the same way as for "first degree students".

  • Bachelor's and Master's programmes with restricted admission: shortly after 15.7./15.1.
  • Bachelor's and Master's programmes with open admission: as soon as possible after receipt of application

Application deadlines for second degree applicants

The general deadlines also apply to all second degree applicants.
