Plagiarism check of a thesis

Information for students

For the plagiarism check with the PlagAware program, you will be asked to upload an additional anonymised version of your thesis.

The question occasionally arises: What exactly does "anonymised version of the thesis mean?"

For you, this means specifically

  • Removing the "obvious": Name, address, matriculation number from the cover page
  • Checking footers and headers for personal information
  • Reviewing the entire thesis for personal information
  • Removing names and personal data from interviews
  • Removing email addresses, dates of birth, etc.

A definition can be found in the recitals to the GDPR: "information that does not relate to an identified or identifiable natural person or personal data that has been anonymised in such a way that the data subject cannot or can no longer be identified".

Even when uploading work for the purpose of checking for plagiarism, students' names may not be given. Instructors must ensure the assignment of employees, e.g. with assignment lists.

Information for examiners

As the examiner, you decide whether plagiarism has occurred.

If a report shows textual similarities, it must be noted whether the similarities were cited in the text. This means that an individual review of the identified textual similarities is required. In addition, a distinction must be made in the assessment between poor academic research (deductions in the grade, passing the examination performance possible) and deception (failing the examination performance); not every case of plagiarism automatically means an assessment of the examination performance with a grade of 5.0.
