Under certain circumstances, students on full-time study programmes can also complete their university studies part-time, provided this is not excluded by the examination regulations of the respective degree programme. Below you can find out why part-time studies are possible and what evidence is required.

Reasons for part-time studies

  • Gainful employment
  • Supervision of relatives
  • Disability or chronic illness that affects university studies
  • a comparable important reason
Evidence to be submitted

  • Gainful employment is generally evidenced by an employment relationship subject to social insurance contributions of at least 14 and no more than 28 hours of regular weekly working hours.
  • Supervision of relatives is generally deemed to exist in the case of raising a child in accordance with Section 25 (5) of the Federal Education and Training Assistance Act in the version dated 21 December 2022 (Federal Law Gazette I p. 2847), up to the age of ten years or the proven nursing of close relatives with assignment to a care level in accordance with Section 15 (1) of the Eleventh Book of the German Social Code in the version dated 20 December 2022 (Federal Law Gazette I p. 2793).
  • Evidence of a disability or chronic illness must be provided in the form of a medical certificate that enables an assessment to be made that proper full-time studies are excluded.
General information on part-time studies

  • Part-time university studies can be taken up in any semester within the standard duration of studies and continued several times, up to a maximum of twice the standard duration of studies.
  • Semesters of part-time studies are counted as half semesters and as full university semesters.
  • If the university's examination regulations stipulate deadlines for the first-time completion of an examination performance, these are extended accordingly. The processing deadlines for theses terminating the study programme remain unaffected by this.
  • In part-time studies, as a rule, half of the credit points or evidence of achievement provided for in full-time studies in accordance with the examination regulations of the corresponding study programme can be acquired per semester. Credits earned through repeat examinations are not taken into account. If more than half of the credit points or evidence of achievement required for full-time studies in accordance with the examination regulations have been acquired in the respective semester of part-time studies, this semester is to be counted as a full semester.
  • Students who are enrolled in another study programme (joint degree) or in a study programme in accordance with § 16 para. 2 or § 24 para. 3 of the Hessian Higher Education Act may not complete their university studies on a part-time basis.
