Related to practice
Use your new knowledge straight away during lab exercises and with your placement partner.

Computer science is ubiquitous in today’s world and plays a major role in virtually every area of life. Computer scientists are always at the cutting edge. They develop complex systems, provide advisory services to clients, supervise networks, create user-friendly apps and programs, and utilise creative tools.
The fields of work of computer scientists are both varied and diverse, often allowing them to think outside the box. The dual study programme offers excellent career prospects, as students gain extensive practical experience alongside their university studies with the support of a placement partner.
In the dual study programme, you can combine theory and practice in the best possible way. You get to know both sides and can use your newly acquired knowledge in practice or discuss issues from your day-to-day work at university. By performing a transfer between study periods at university and placements in an enterprise, theoretical knowledge can be applied straight away.
The dual Bachelor's programme in applied computer science comprises 6 semesters and is structured so that periods at the university transfer with periods at the placement partner. During the lecture period, you will be at the university 4 days a week. You may complete one day – the work placement day – at your placement partner’s premises. During the lecture-free period, you will work full-time at your placement partner’s premises. You will be given time off for 1. examinations and 2. assessments. You can view the programme in more detail in our study plan.
To deepen the practical transfer between the university and the enterprise, you will complete a number of practical / internship modules. In these modules, you will agree on a suitable topic with your placement partner, enabling you to apply the topics you have learnt in a much more related to practice way. You can find an overview of all the modules in our study schedule.
A solid grounding in basic knowledge, yet specialised – as well as providing long-lasting basic knowledge, the university studies programme offers a wide range of optional modules in the following areas:
Embedded systems can be found in many areas of everyday life – for example, in vehicles (airbags, navigation systems, etc.), mobile phones, domestic appliances and consumer electronics. Here, they perform monitoring, control or regulation functions. Graduates should
As part of the IT Infrastructure specialisation, you will focus on the conception, planning, development and deployment of communication networks such as intranet systems or secure IT networks. You will acquire subject-specific skills, abilities and knowledge relevant to your future professional field in the field of public and private networks (internet, intranet, Wi-Fi, VPN, …) and will thereby be equipped to successfully use academic methods and techniques to solve current problems relating to the network-based design, development and introduction of mobile applications and various internet services in professional practice. Graduates should be able to
In the field of digital media, the focus is on the creative design and digitisation / digitalisation of media, such as electronic publishing, audio-video production, 3D modelling and the theoretical basics of visualisation. Graduates
In the business IT specialisation, you will learn to understand business contexts and to map and support these using methods and applications. An example of this is generating product recommendations based on other customers’ purchases or optimising supply chains. Graduates should
With German qualifications: 1 May to 30 September
With foreign qualifications: 1 May to 30 September
1. Submit an application to one of our placement partners for a dual study programme vacancy
2. Sign the learning agreement for the dual study programme
3. Apply to Fulda University of Applied Sciences for the applied computer science degree programme
Enterprises usually start the application process early – in some cases more than a year in advance. However, as not all vacancies can always be filled, it may still be worth applying at a later date.

As the placement partners invest in your training, the prospects of being taken on by many enterprises are very good. Furthermore, you will have excellent career opportunities across a wide range of sectors.
Upon completion of the dual study programme in applied computer science, excellent career prospects await, as you will have additional relevant practical experience to complement your theoretical knowledge. This makes you the ideal candidate for direct entry into a position of responsibility within the IT sector.
Computer scientists work in almost all sectors, across companies of very different sizes. They are in demand in a wide variety of business areas, such as sales, quality management, hardware and software development, or consultancy. These diverse fields of application offer computer scientists varied roles and the opportunity to specialise according to their own interests and to establish themselves professionally through their specialist knowledge.
Possible areas of work include, amongst others: software development and programming; the planning and operation of IT and network infrastructures; IT administration and management; consultancy on IT matters; embedded systems, user services and support, database development and administration, application development and customisation of ERP systems, development of multimedia applications and products, audio and video processing, and the development of learning systems.

The study programme is offered by the Department of Applied Computer Science. Visit the department’s website to find out more about your new environment, the teaching and your future professors.
