Vocational Education in Health (Bachelor)

Vocational Education in Health

Teaching Health

Thank you for your interest. We are delighted that you have found your way here. You can choose between two variants (specialisations) in our university studies.

Variant 1 (B.Ed.) qualifies you for the teaching profession in the state school service at vocational schools, e.g. vocational secondary schools, higher technical schools, vocational training colleges. This is the first teacher training programme in Hesse to train teachers for the subject of health. The Bachelor's degree is followed seamlessly by the consecutive Master's study programme.

Variant 2 (B.A.) qualifies students for teaching positions at schools and universities in the health system, e.g. training, continuing education and further education at nursing or physiotherapy schools. The condition in this case is a completed professional qualification in the respective field. This means you will become a nursing educator or physiotherapy educator.

Both options are organised in cooperation between the Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the University of Kassel. The courses take place at both locations.

Cooperation Uni Kassel

You complete the study programme at two locations.

  • You have a university entrance qualification.
  • You have gained at least 1,500 hours of practical experience in the health system.
  • You would like to teach young people in vocational training programmes on the topic of health.
  • You would like to combine your interests in education and health science.

All teacher training programmes are divided into three parts:

  • Core study programme in educational science, including practical university studies (5-week internship during the lecture-free period)
  • Health as a first subject with associated subject didactics, including further practical university studies (5-week internship during the lecture-free period),
  • General education second subject (politics and business, chemistry, physics, mathematics, German, English, Spanish, French, Protestant or Catholic religion) including specialised didactics. The subjects nursing and physiotherapy are not general education subjects and are only open to students with a corresponding professional qualification.

Educational science core study programme

The University of Kassel offers a core study programme in educational science. The core study programme imparts interdisciplinary competences for all teacher training students. Educational, psychological, social and social sciences content is part of the core study programme, which is considered in the context of vocational education, among other things. The core study programme also comprises a school internship, which is located at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences.

Health as a professional discipline

The professional discipline of Health is studied at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences. In line with the particularly important subject areas in the syllabuses of professional schools with health as a subject, human biology and medicine are a specialisation. You will also learn to understand the structures of the health system and categorise health professions within it. You will study social inequalities in health opportunities and strategies to support health. The professional discipline is rounded off with specialised didactic content, including a school internship.

Second subject

The following general education second subjects are available for selection at the University of Kassel: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, German, English, Spanish, French, Politics and Business, Protestant or Catholic Religion.

The non-general education second subjects nursing and physiotherapy take place at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences. These can only be studied with a professional licence obtained prior to university studies.

Choosing a general education second subject for the state teaching profession or nursing or physiotherapy for teaching at special schools in the health system.

University entrance qualification and evidence of relevant professional training, internships or comparable activities in the health system totalling 1,500 hours. If evidence of relevant professional training, internships or comparable activities in the health system amounting to less than 1,500 hours but at least 1,200 hours is provided at the start of programme, admission may be granted subject to conditions on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants who have not applied for their university entrance qualification at a German-speaking facility must provide evidence of German skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (DSH-2 or equivalent).

With German educational certificates: 15 April to 30 September, with foreign educational certificates: 1 March to 30 September

Education actively design

Would you like to accompany young people on their educational journey and actively help shape education?

The Master's degree (M.Ed.) is followed by the preparatory service period (period of practical training) for all those who wish to become a state school teacher (variant 1). There is no comparable teacher training programme in Hesse. Health is therefore a shortage subject here and in other federal states with particularly good employment opportunities in the teaching profession.

Students who choose nursing as a second subject (variant 2) can work as a practical skills instructor in training, further education and continuing education after completing their Bachelor's degree (B.A.). Students who wish to teach theory as a nursing teacher require a Master's degree. Students who choose physiotherapy as a second subject can teach as a teacher at vocational schools after completing their Bachelor's degree (B.A.). No Master's degree is currently graded. The move towards the academisation of the health professions means that there will be an increased demand for well-qualified teachers in the coming years. You can therefore expect good demand on the labour market.
