Study in English
Work in international teams during your university studies.
Data science is becoming increasingly important in national and international enterprises and comprises the process of understanding data, data preparation, modelling, evaluation and implementation of data-driven solutions.
Skills in this area are becoming more important as German enterprises are currently working hard on digital transformation. The Stifterverband für die deutsche Wirtschaft, an association of around 3,000 German DAX-listed and medium-sized enterprises, forecasts 700,000 new workstations with technological competences in Germany, more than 400,000 of which will be in the field of complex data analysis alone.
The Master's in Data Science is an international, English-language Master's programme and is aimed at students with a Bachelor's degree from Germany, other European countries and other countries. The study programme builds on the computer science knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's programme and requires basic knowledge of object-oriented programming and databases.
The Data Science study programme at Fulda University of Applied Sciences has a 90 and a 120 ECTS credits option and lasts 1.5 and 2 years respectively. It is taught entirely in English and emphasises project work and intercultural teams.
Students on the Master's programme in Data Science use academic methods and techniques to derive decisions for various fields of application from data sets. The Master's programme is practice-oriented and focuses on data engineering and data analysis. Various data frameworks are used, such as Python and R. This knowledge is transferred in courses related to practice, team projects and the Master's thesis.
The international orientation of the study programme offers the opportunity to set individual specialisations in data science and computer science during the integrated semester abroad (120 ECTS credits option) at one of the partner universities. Alternatively, a research project as well as computer science courses and elective subjects can be taken a course.
The first two semesters begin with basics in Data Engineering (yellow) and Data Analysis (orange), an application-specific course (blue) and a course in Data Security, Law and Ethics (brown). This knowledge can be used in various functional areas in the team project and in the Master's thesis.
Winter semester:
German/EU/EEA nationals with a foreign first degree: 1 March to 30 September
All other nationalities with a foreign first degree: 1 March to 31 May
All international applicants with a German first degree: 15 April to 30 September
Summer semester:
German/EU/EEA nationals with a foreign first degree: 1 September to 31 March
All other nationals with a foreign first degree: 1 September to 1 November
All international applicants with a German first degree: 15 October to 31 March
If you start the Master's Data Science programme with a 180 ECTS credits degree, you will take a course in the 120 ECTS credits option. If this semester is taken at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, you will take a course in addition to a research project and a soft skills course and choose further courses from the compulsory and elective catalogue of the department's other study programmes.
This option allows you to deepen your interest in subject areas not covered by the study schedule of this Master's programme.
If you start the Master's in Data Science with a 180 ECTS credits degree, take a course in the 120 ECTS credits option.
Please note: The semester abroad is only possible for German and EU/EAA citizens.
The 120 ECTS credits option allows a very flexible mobility window in the third semester. Six elective subjects from computer science can be taken abroad during this window. Partner universities in Europe and overseas can be found here.
Within the E³UDRES² network, we co-operate with many international universities, e.g. Politecnico Setúbal (Portugal), Saxion University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands) and FH St. Pölten (Austria). Funding through Erasmus+ is required for the stays.
If you start the Master's in Data Science with a 210 ECTS credits Bachelor's degree, you can choose whether to take the 90 or 120 ETCS option of the Master's programme.
The 90 ETCS option allows you to acquire the core competences of Data Science. In the Team Project, Master Seminar and Master Thesis courses, you can transfer and specialise your knowledge in the various fields of application.
The internationally oriented study programme aims to prepare graduates for a career as a data scientist who are able to understand data sets, predict and identify trends and derive important business decisions from them.
Successful graduates are able to work in global and intercultural teams in a wide range of positions (e.g. as an analyst, consultant, engineer). They are able to carry out self-employed data science projects from the receipt of data sets to the implementation of the solution, to guide them and to assess and categorise individual steps.
The study programme is an offer of the Department of Applied Computer Science. Find out more about your new environment, the teaching and your future professors on the department's website.
