DUAL STUDIES
Combine a vocational training qualification with a state examination and a Bachelor's degree.

What nutrition is recommended for diabetes? How can people with food intolerances eat a balanced and enjoyable diet? Which dietetics support cancer therapy? How can malnutrition be prevented? In the dual study programme in dietetics, we offer in-depth insights and academic answers to these and other questions. By combining theory and practice, you will receive comprehensive training that will enable you to analyse nutritional challenges from a research perspective and develop effective nutritional strategies.
Internationally, the field of dietetics is exclusively taught with an academic degree. In Germany, the professional qualification is acquired through a state examination after three years of training at vocational training colleges. The dual Bachelor's degree study programme provides international connectivity that was not previously available and offers the first step towards academisation.
Do you enjoy working with employees? Are you interested in science and nutritional medicine and could you imagine working in clinical diet therapy and nutritional counselling? Then the dual Bachelor's degree programme in Dietetics is just right for you.
The study programme is suitable for you if you are interested in nutrition and nutritional therapy after completing your (university entrance) qualifications and would like to combine your university studies with professional training.
The dietetics study programme is designed as a full-time dual study programme. To this end, the Nutritional, Food and Consumer Sciences department cooperates with five state vocational training colleges for dietetic assistants. The standard duration of studies is 9 semesters. In the first 6 semesters, you will complete your training as a dietitian at one of the cooperating vocational training colleges in parallel with your university studies. In the last 3 semesters, you will study modules from the fields of dietetics and nutritional science, dietary counselling, health care, social and cultural sciences in full-time attendance.
The modules build on each other step by step. Theoretical basics and research methods are used in practical case studies. In project work, you will work on questions comprising practical issues based on academic basics.
University entrance qualification
Applicants who have not obtained their university entrance qualification at a German-speaking facility must provide evidence of German skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (DSH-2 or equivalent).
Training contract with one of the cooperation dietary schools and learning agreement with one of the cooperation dietary schools.
With German educational certificates: 15 April to 30 September, with foreign educational certificates: 1 March to 30 September

Combining university studies with training as a dietitian at school offers many advantages: it increases students' academic and professional competences by enabling them to translate current research findings directly into practical solution strategies. In addition, a dual study programme is also financially rewarding, as there is usually a monthly remuneration.

After successfully completing your university studies, you will be able to work independently and autonomously in diet therapy and nutritional counselling. You will also be able to develop concepts and strategies to put academic findings in nutritional medicine and dietetics into practice and test their effectiveness.
Potential employers are primarily clinics and hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, but also health insurance providers, research institutions and manufacturers of dietetic foods.
A postgraduate Master's degree is also possible.

”For me, university studies are the perfect complement to my training as a dietitian, enabling me to expand my knowledge in areas that had no place in my training.
“

”I was particularly positively challenged by the suggestions to critically question the content I had learnt and to form my own opinion based on academic research.
