In the Health Economics and Health Policy study programme, economic and political issues in the context of the health system are closely related. In the first three semesters you will acquire core competences in terms of content and methodology, and in the fourth semester you will put what you have learnt into practice. In the final two semesters, you will use this practical experience to deepen the knowledge you have already acquired and use the academic methods you have learned in a course project and thesis (Bachelor's degree).

Basics in the first three semesters
At the beginning of your university studies, you will focus in particular on economic and political basics. For example, you will learn how the organisation and funding of healthcare in Germany works. We will teach you economically sound decision-making procedures and place them in the political and social law context of the German health system. You will also learn which health impairments healthcare systems need to be particularly well prepared for and what role different starting opportunities and other social factors play in this. From the first semester onwards, we will familiarise you with academic research. In addition to understanding academic texts, the main focus here is on producing your own academic research and all the skills required for this. In addition to researching academic literature, you will also learn, for example, how to conduct a survey or interviews and what to look out for when analysing the results.

Application of what you have learnt in practice in the fourth semester
In the fourth semester, you will use the knowledge you have acquired in the previous programme structure in practice. To do this, you will complete an internship in the field of Health Economics and Health Policy - for example with health insurance providers, associations or other institutions in the health system. You will also be well prepared and qualified for internships in politics, the pharmaceutical industry or other enterprises in the healthcare sector. The internship can be completed either in Germany or abroad. A semester abroad is also possible in the fourth semester. We will support you in preparing for the internship and help you to find a placement that suits your interests. We accompany you during the internship and also evaluate your practical experience together with you. Our students tell us time and again that they are well prepared for their internship and gain valuable experience. In order to give you an insight into possible future areas of work, as well as suggestions on how to get there, we regularly host guest lectures by graduates of our Health Economics and Health Policy study programme.

Specialisationin content, project and thesis in the last two semesters
Motivated by exciting insights into practice, you will deepen your knowledge of content in the last two semesters with a comparison of international healthcare systems as well as nursing policy and nursing economics. In a course project over two semesters, you will deal with a current health policy or health economics topic (e.g. the prospects of digital health applications or the future of the public health service) and use the research methods you have learnt in practice. In the final semester, you will write your Bachelor's thesis on a topic relevant to Health Economics and Health Policy.

Career opportunities after university studies

The career opportunities after university studies are extremely diverse. For example, after your university studies you can work

  • at associations of health insurance providers or service providers (e.g. associations of doctors, hospitals, nursing homes) at state or federal level. There you will observe current health policy developments, accompany legislative procedures and assess their effects. You will gradually take on responsibility for representing the interests of the respective association in federal and state politics.
  • at larger health insurance providers or statutory accident insurance organisations. You assess the costs and benefits of important decisions and are involved in contract negotiations with doctors and hospitals.
  • with a member of parliament in the Bundestag or state parliament. They assess the impact of new laws and advise members of parliament. Following your often temporary work in parliaments, you have excellent prospects with other institutions and associations.
  • at trade unions, consumer associations or patient organisations. You will be involved in developing concepts for better working conditions and compliance with consumer and patient rights. You will also be involved in the implementation of these concepts.

You will be optimally prepared for a Master's programme in Public Health.

Students and alumni share their experiences Impressions from the study program

The study programme provides an interdisciplinary and multidimensional view of the health system in the interplay between the social, economic and medical aspects of health. By incorporating the medical, management and system perspectives, the programme prepares students in a comprehensive manner for the upcoming challenges in the health system and enables them to derive practical solutions.

Jonas Ehmig, Managing Director of Medical Care Centres and Outpatient Medicine for the Sana clinics in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, graduate in Health Economics and Health Policy (B.Sc.)

The holistic view of the health system from an economic, political and legal perspective provides a comprise overview and enables students to critically scrutinise laws and reforms. The study programme offers the opportunity not only to acquire specialist know-how, but also to develop the ability to actively shape the health system and think innovatively. This opens up a wide range of career opportunities.

Larissa Harth, Global Marketing & Product Manager at B. Braun, graduate in Health Economics and Health Policy (B.Sc.)

The concept of the "Health Economics and Health Policy" study programme is largely unique in Germany and has opened many doors for me to a fulfilling career in the health system. Thanks to the combination of a strong academic focus and modules with practical relevance, I had all the conditions I needed to complete a Master's in International Health Policy at the London School of Economics in England. Since completing my degree, I have been involved in research and am now working on my doctoral degree on protecting the population from the health effects of climate change.

Hannah Lintener, Research assistant/doctoral student at the Centre for Preventive Medicine and Digital Health (CPD) at Heidelberg University, graduate in Health Economics and Health Policy (B.Sc.)

Thanks to the unique combination of health economics and health policy topics, the study programme provides valuable competences for actively shaping change in the health system. By incorporating innovative healthcare concepts from Germany and abroad, I learnt to critically reflect on current German health care and to think "outside the box". It was precisely this way of thinking that subsequently helped me to establish a digital health solution in Swiss health care as a project manager.

Stefan Banning, Doctoral candidate at the Department of Applied Sciences at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, graduate in Health Economics and Health Policy (B.Sc.)

The study programme gave me an in-depth understanding of the German healthcare system, including the relevant players and their interests as well as various funding and care concepts in an international comparison. As a result, I was optimally prepared for my Master's in Public Health and my work in health policy. I would like to continue to work for a socially just and public welfare-oriented healthcare system and can recommend the study programme to anyone pursuing similar goals.

Johanna Frieg, Research assistant to a health policy maker at federal level, graduate in Health Economics and Health Policy (B.Sc.)

The study programme offers a deep insight into the tasks and interests of the players in the health system. In my day-to-day work, the knowledge I acquired during my university studies helps me to reflect on and categorise political decisions and solutions for shaping health care. From my own experience, I can also recommend the study programme as a further qualification after training.

Jacqueline Schäfer, Social insurance for agriculture, forestry and horticulture, contract clerk in the area of social services: benefits, graduate in Health Economics and Health Policy (B.Sc.)

The study programme offers a unique combination and focus throughout Germany. The economic, political and legal contexts in the health system are considered in a multidimensional way. Both the academic focus and the practical modules, such as the work placement semester, were very helpful for my subsequent Master's degree in Public Health (M.Sc.) at Fulda University of Applied Sciences and my current professional appointment. The career prospects after a successful degree are very diverse and enable me to play an active role in shaping the health system.

Julia Hoffmann, Consultant for the coordination centre for specialist continuing education at the Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, graduate in Health Economics and Health Policy (B.Sc.)
