Industrial Engineering Life Sciences

Interdisciplinary interface of Life sciences and business

The complexity of processes in the life science industry requires the training of interdisciplinary specialists. They should have sound business knowledge in the areas of product development, product commercialisation, product provision, innovation management and marketing. They should also be proficient in the use of food technology or biotechnology.

Enterprises need to be competitive. To do this, they need new product ideas. These must be realised on an industrial scale and then successfully marketed. The expertise for this is imparted in the "Industrial Engineering Life Sciences" study programme through the interdisciplinary interface between the two departments of food technology and business. This is often an essential component of the requirement profiles of future managers.

We offer specialist support in the form of tutorials for many modules in the first two semesters. Our student mentors are your contact persons for all questions relating to your university studies.

The Bachelor's programme in Industrial Engineering Life Sciences has a modular structure and starts in the winter semester. The standard duration of studies is 7 semesters (210 ECTS credits). As a rule, 6 modules are completed per semester.

In the interdisciplinary university studies "Industrial Engineering Life Sciences" you will acquire knowledge in Industrial Biotechnology or Food Technology in addition to Business Sciences knowledge, depending on the specialisation. In food technology training, product and process optimisation and food innovation are a specialisation. In Industrial Biotechnology, you can expect modules such as Cell Biology & Cell Culture Technology or Molecular Biology & Genetic Engineering. In business training, the focus is on quality, innovation and marketing management.

In the first academic year, you will initially learn the necessary scientific, engineering and business basics. The modules from the third semester onwards serve as specific preparation for your professional career. Please note that you must complete a basic internship of 8 weeks by the beginning of the 4th semester. In addition, specialisation compulsory modules are offered in the areas of technology, engineering and management. You will find the corresponding module plans in the download area.

During university studies, students are trained in professional, social and methodological skills through group and project work as well as presentation techniques. Theoretically acquired knowledge can be directly used and specialised in various lab practicals. An extensive range of compulsory electives enables you to set individual specialisations in your university studies.

In the 7th semester, you will complete your practical placements and write your Bachelor's thesis. The internship in industry at the end of your university studies prepares you ideally for your career entry.
