Study programme Midwifery (B.Sc.)

Midwifery (Bachelor)

Very close to the The miracle of birth

Advising and supervising a pregnant woman, accompanying a woman giving birth, supporting a family in its formation - the work of a midwife (female, male, diverse) begins with the desire to have a child and only ends when the child is sitting, crawling or standing. As a midwife, you know the current state of best practice, reflect on your professional actions and respect the wishes of pregnant women.

Midwives support women and their families during pregnancy, birth, the postpartum period and breastfeeding, as well as with family planning issues. If these processes proceed normally, midwives work independently and autonomously, prioritising the needs and possibilities as well as the self-determination of the women being supervised. In order to meet the complex tasks of midwifery work responsibly and in a way that is appropriate to the situation, and to provide dedicated supervision, midwives need a high level of professional competence, the ability to reflect critically on themselves and their actions, strong nerves and the passion to empathise with the different living conditions of women and to help shape them with a view to sustainable family health.

Dual study programme

The study programme is a dual study programme in cooperation with a practical placement partner.

The undergraduate programme in midwifery comprises the entire spectrum of original midwifery activities and also offers academically sound and practice-oriented training at university level, teaching the basic skills required to practise the midwifery profession. The university qualification ensures alignment with international standards in training and professional practice.

Flexible Supporting families

Well-qualified midwives are urgently needed. Midwives work in prenatal care and advisory services, they help with complaints during pregnancy, provide obstetric and postnatal care and offer breastfeeding and nutritional counselling. They also run courses on the topics of becoming and being parents (birth preparation, postnatal recovery, infant care) at various organisations.

Midwives can work as employees or as assistants in a hospital or doctor's practice, self-employed with their own practice, in a practice team or in a birthing centre. They work in interdisciplinary teams or networks. Related areas of midwifery work, such as advisory centres, the youth welfare office or the public health service, are also possible areas of employment. The work as a "family midwife", who accompanies families in the context of early help in the first year of life, should be emphasised here.

Thanks to their academic training, graduates of the programmes offered in midwifery can work as research assistants at colleges or universities, for example in projects or in clinical or social science research. With your professional licence, you can also work in other European countries.
