Social law / Migration and law (Bachelor)

Social law / Migration and law

Social justice and diversity in our society

The study programme Social Law (Bachelor of Laws, LL.B.) imparts legal, social and economic competences for a broad field of activity in the areas of social law as well as migration law and migration law counselling (new). Both training programmes for social lawyers and migration lawyers combine legal expertise with strong communication skills in advisory services and negotiation.

New: Study "Migration and Law"

From the winter semester 2025/26, the study programme in social law will be offered in the "Migration and Law" variant, which is unique in Germany. The innovative university studies qualify students in the areas of migration law and migration law counselling. The study programme provides in-depth knowledge on central topics of our migration society that are of great business and socio-political importance, such as mobility and labour migration, refugee protection and family reunification, integration, naturalisation and social (human) laws. At the interface of law and social sciences, it prepares students to actively contribute to shaping a just and sustainable society.

Difference to university studies in law

In contrast to traditional law studies, which take a very long time and primarily prepare students for the profession of judge (as well as the legal profession and public prosecutor's office), the Social Law degree programme awards the title Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) Graduates of both "Social Law" or "Migration and Law" degree programmes are qualified for a very broad professional field in enterprises, the social economy, public authorities and NGOs. Afterwards, it is possible to start a job or a Master's degree with a subsequent doctoral degree.

Law

They help people to obtain their rights under the law.

Business

They make important decisions in a legal, social and business context.

Social affairs

They negotiate compromises and find solutions.

The university studies programme is aimed at prospective students

  • who want to help people to obtain their law,
  • who enjoy advising, negotiating and mediating,
  • who are interested in existential social issues and laws,
  • who are looking for a meaningful and value-orientated activity,
  • who find it exciting to work with arguments and on legal texts,
  • who think in European and international terms and
  • who want to understand the social and political contexts of the migration society.

The university studies are a full-time programme. However, under certain circumstances (e.g. employment or supervision of relatives), the university studies can also be completed part-time.

The programme lasts seven semesters, of which

  • four semesters of university studies
  • one work placement semester
  • two semesters of specialisation with a thesis module

The duration of study is extended accordingly for part-time studies.

In the first semesters, students already concentrate on the diverse requirements of future practice. Initially, multidisciplinary basics are laid, with law being the largest area of specialisation. Initial specialisations are chosen in social or migration law. This is combined with the teaching of social sciences and Business Sciences basics. Students will learn

  • legal conflict resolution
  • decision-making skills in a legal, social and business context
  • Communication and counselling skills

A work placement semester offers an initial introduction to later areas of work and can also be chosen in the field of social law or migration law. Here, the theoretical knowledge gained so far is tested and specialised in practice. This is followed by in-depth university studies with the thesis module in the chosen area of law.

Students at Fulda University of Applied Sciences terminate their university studies in "Social Law" or "Migration and Law" with their Bachelor's thesis, depending on the option chosen.

Both variants of the study programme, "Social Law" and "Migration and Law", will be offered as a dual study programme from the winter semester 2025/2026. This will enable students to combine their regular university studies with practical placements in enterprises.

ADVISE AND DECIDE AS A MIGRATION LAWYER

Graduates of the "Migration and Law" study programme have numerous opportunities in a field with a shortage of skilled workers. They can work for migration authorities, NGOs such as Pro Asyl and Amnesty International or law firms. There are also many employers in the social law field, including welfare associations, job centres and social insurance companies. Professional fields in social policy and business also offer interesting prospects.

Students and alumni share their experiences Impressions from the study program

I chose university studies in social law because I want to combine law and social issues. We need more people who want to improve the rule of law. Where injustice becomes law, resistance becomes a duty. We need more people with a sense of justice and commitment.

Ndjwa, Study programme LL.B. Social Law

I have learnt to cast stories about people in legal solutions and to develop a reflective view of our legal system. I can recommend the study programme to anyone who has a strong sense of justice and wants to get involved in it.
