Social Work – dual-track (Bachelor)

Social Work – dual-track

Studying at the same time and work

A dual study programme involves working in the field whilst studying. So, whilst you are studying Social Work, you will also be working for one of our partner organisations in the field of social work.

This enables both a close link between theory and practice and a programme of study in which all those involved value the practical aspect, which is also reflected in the course content and assignments.

At the same time, as this programme is organised as an online course with just one monthly practical block (5 times per semester on Fridays and Saturdays), you can live and work wherever you choose; you may then travel to Fulda for the face-to-face sessions.

Blended Learning Approach

There are three learning venues: your placement, the online learning platform, and one face-to-face weekend per month.

As this degree programme is organised as an online course with just one practical block per month (5 sessions per semester on Fridays and Saturdays), you can study at Fulda University of Applied Sciences whilst living and working in your home town; where necessary, you will then travel to Fulda for the face-to-face sessions.

BASA-dual is aimed primarily at people

  • who wish to earn a living whilst studying,
  • who are already involved in voluntary social work, e.g. in self-help groups, and wish to establish themselves professionally in the field of social work,
  • who have discovered the field of social work and are therefore considering a career change and wish to gain the necessary basic qualifications.

The degree programme is delivered as a dual study programme based on the ‘blended learning’ model, with three learning locations: as a student, you

  • work for a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 28 hours per week at your work placement
  • study online via a learning platform from home (approx. 20 hours per week)
  • attend a face-to-face weekend (Friday and Saturday) at Fulda University of Applied Sciences once a month.

The programme comprises 210 credit points under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), of which 115 credit points are earned through self-study and 65 credit points through face-to-face sessions and project work (1 credit point corresponds roughly to a workload of 30 hours).

Upon obtaining state recognition, you will receive 30 credit points.

University entrance qualification

Furthermore, a study contract must have been concluded with a social work provider, specifying a weekly working time of between 15 and 28 hours, and this contract must be submitted; additionally, the provider must have concluded a cooperation agreement with Fulda University of Applied Sciences as part of the dual degree programme in Social Work. This agreement must also be submitted.

For applicants with German qualifications: 1 May to 30 September
For applicants with foreign qualifications: 1 May to 30 September

Female students on dual study programmes

#bestofboth: Dual study programme

Combining a degree programme with extensive work placements offers many advantages: the knowledge gained in lectures can be applied directly in practice, and upon graduation you’ll enter the world of work with excellent career prospects. With a monthly stipend, a dual study programme is also financially worthwhile.

Putting people first a meaningful vocation

Three students are working together at a table

It is highly likely that you will be able to start your career with your practice partner after completing your degree, as you have already been able to combine theory and practice at an early stage. This makes you an attractive candidate, including for other employers.

Furthermore, thanks to the relevant professional experience you have gained whilst studying, you will be able to take on positions of responsibility more quickly.

Once you have graduated, you can, of course, go on to do a (part-time) Master’s degree.

Students and alumni share their experiences Impressions from the study program

”

For me, the work-study programme was the best decision, as it allows me to apply theoretical knowledge directly in a practical setting. At the same time, I’m gaining a better and better understanding of why certain programmes in social work are designed the way they are. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at lisa.vockeroth@sw.hs-fulda.de.
