Social law - dual / Migration and law (Bachelor)

Social law - dual / Migration and law

Social justice and diversity in our society

The dual study programme in social law (Bachelor of Laws, LL.B.) imparts legal, social and economic competences for a broad field of activity in the areas of social law as well as migration law and migration law counselling (new).

From the winter semester 2025/26, both training courses for social lawyers and migration lawyers can be studied in dual form. A dual study programme means working in the field while studying. So while you are studying social law / migration and law, you will also be working for one of our practical placement partners in the field of social law or migration law. This enables an intensive theory-practice connection as well as training in which everyone involved appreciates the connection to practice, which is also reflected in the content and tasks of the university studies. The dual study programme is also worthwhile financially, as there is usually a monthly remuneration.

New: Study "Migration and Law"

From the winter semester 2025/26, the dual study programme in social law will be offered in the "Migration and Law" variant, which is unique in Germany. The innovative university studies qualify students in the areas of migration law and migration law counselling. The study programme provides in-depth knowledge on central topics of our migration society that are of great business and socio-political importance, such as mobility and labour migration, refugee protection and family reunification, integration, naturalisation and social (human) laws. At the interface of law and social sciences, it prepares students to actively contribute to shaping a just and sustainable society.

Difference to university studies in law

In contrast to traditional law studies, which take a very long time and primarily prepare students for the profession of judge (as well as the legal profession and public prosecutor's office), the Social Law degree programme awards the title Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) Graduates of both "Social Law" or "Migration and Law" degree programmes are qualified for a very broad professional field in enterprises, the social economy, public authorities and NGOs. Afterwards, it is possible to start a job or a Master's degree with a subsequent doctoral degree.

  • who find it exciting to work with arguments and on legal texts,

Combining theory and practice

The dual study programme is studied as a course variant. This means that the university studies are completed together with the full-time students on the face-to-face social law study programme. In particular, the same modules are attended from the first to the fifth semester. As the dual study programme is a practice-integrated study programme, the theoretical phases with courses on campus at Fulda University of Applied Sciences alternate with practical phases during the lecture-free period at the practical placement partner.

During the lecture period in the semester, students attend the scheduled courses and take part in examinations. During the lecture-free periods, practical placements take place at the practical placement partner. Students also complete various self-selected modules during the course of their university studies as well as the practical module semester in the fifth semester and the thesis module, the Bachelor's thesis, at the placement partner company. As a result, graduates of the dual study programme acquire particular competence in the areas of time management, self-organisation, structured work, communication strategies, the ability to work in a team and conflict management for their future employment.

The programme lasts seven semesters, of which

  • four semesters of university studies
  • one work placement semester
  • two semesters of specialisation with a thesis module

In the first semesters, students already concentrate on the diverse requirements of their future practice. Initially, multidisciplinary basics are laid, with law being the largest area of specialisation. Initial specialisations are chosen in social or migration law. This is combined with the teaching of social sciences and Business Sciences basics. Students will learn

  • legal conflict resolution
  • decision-making skills in a legal, social and business context
  • Communication and counselling skills

A work placement semester offers an initial introduction to later areas of work and can also be chosen in the field of social law or migration law. Here, the theoretical knowledge gained so far is tested and specialised in practice. The work placement semester is followed by in-depth university studies with the thesis module in the chosen area of law.

Students at Fulda University of Applied Sciences terminate their university studies in "Social Law" or "Migration and Law" with their Bachelor's thesis, depending on the option chosen.

Procedure for applicants with a learning agreement with a cooperation partner

If you would like to complete the dual study programme in collaboration with one of the university's cooperation partners, the first step is to submit a written application to one or more practical placement partners. The application should generally be submitted one year before the start of programme. The application deadlines may vary - some appointments are called for proposals a year before the start of programme, others are filled at short notice. As the study programme starts for the first time in October 2025/2026, please contact practical placement partners as soon as possible.

Applicants undergo a selection procedure with many practical placement partners. Those who successfully complete this procedure conclude a learning agreement with the practical placement partner.

Following the conclusion of the contract, you apply for the study programme Social Law / Migration and Law Dual at Fulda University of Applied Sciences as part of the admission procedure. A photocopy of the learning agreement must also be submitted.

If you have any questions regarding admission and application, please get in touch with the contact person for dual study programmes.

Combining university studies with extended practical placements offers many advantages: The knowledge from the seminars can be used directly in practice and after completing your university studies, you start your career with the best career opportunities. With the monthly remuneration, a dual study programme is also financially worthwhile.
