The Central E-Learning Lab supports you in particular in preparing your courses with regard to the possibilities of digitally supported teaching with the help of the video streaming service Panopto. This is available to you in the learning platform of your department.
We have prepared the following short video tutorials for you:
- Watch videos (3:07)
- Recording videos with Panopto (8:30)
- Embedding videos in the learning platform (2:42)
- Integrating the Panopto folder (1:59)
The easiest way to access the Panopto platform is via your learning platform. This link will also take you to the Panopto platform: hsfulda.cloud.panopto.eu Please note the login instructions further down on this page.
Panopto offers you the possibility to easily enrich your course with videos. You can upload videos independently and without waiting and integrate them directly into your course on the learning platform. You don't even have to pay attention to the file size, because you have unlimited storage space at your disposal.
Another plus: You can not only upload existing videos, but also produce new videos directly with Panopto. Whether you prefer to use live streams or recordings in your course is entirely up to you - as are the access rights for your videos. You decide who is allowed to see your videos.
With the help of the online editor, you can edit your videos: small slips of the tongue can be hidden just as quickly as longer passages that should not be published. But you can not only edit out unwanted parts of your video, you can also add further material to your video. For example, Panopto offers the option of inserting presentation slides later if you did not include them when you recorded your video. You can also have subtitles automatically added to your video or insert a quiz so that you can check the learning content you have just discussed.
Both "Panopto Video" and "Panopto Folder" are available as activities in your course on the learning platform.
While with "Panopto Video" you provide a single video in your course, with "Panopto Folder" you link the directory belonging to your course and offer your course participants bundled access to all videos you have uploaded in your course.
First of all, it should be said: If you use Panopto via the learning platform of your subject area, there is normally no need to register separately with Panopto. In this context, "use" means "upload videos", "provide videos" or "record videos". Registration takes place automatically when you include the activity "Panopto Folder" or "Panopto Video", for example.
If you still see the Panopto login screen, please first make sure that you are logged in to the learning platform of your subject area. Then switch to the Panopto website. There you may need to select your subject area in the dropdown. This is the case when you see an input form with: Panopto, username, password. To change the instance of the learning platform, click on "Panopto". This opens the dropdown and you can select your subject area. The form fields Username and Password disappear. Afterwards, all you have to do is click on Log in.
To make certain settings, edit the video or view the statistics of the video, the Panopto player is a possible way to access these functions.
If you have integrated a Panopto video in your course, click on the video. A new page will open with a video player embedded. This is not yet the Panopto player. Move your mouse over the arrow at the bottom right (next to the symbol for switching to full screen mode). The note "Show in Panopto" appears. Click on the arrow. Now the Panopto player opens.
If you have included the Panopto folder in your course, you can click on the desired video in the Panopto folder to call it up directly in the Panopto player.
If you only see an error message instead of the usual video display or Panopto interface, please go through the following three steps to narrow down exactly what problem is occurring.
1) Panopto is currently not available
To check whether the Panopto services are currently available at all, you can go to trust.panopto.com (LINK TO: trust.panopto.com/). If all systems in Europe are shown in green, the Panopto services are available. If the systems are shown as not available (red), the problem is on the Panopto side. Then you have to be patient and wait until Panopto is working again without errors.
2) Missing Panopto cookie
If you have deleted your browser cookies or watched the videos in an incognito tab, your browser may be missing the Panopto cookie. Without it, however, you cannot be authenticated by Panopto and the content cannot be displayed. To set the Panopto cookie, please follow the procedure below:
- Check in your browser that the use and storage of cookies is allowed.
- Log out on all learning platforms of Fulda University of Applied Sciences and, if necessary, also on the Panopto platform.
- Log in to the learning platform again.
- Go to the Fulda University of Applied Sciences Panopto website: hsfulda.cloud.panopto.eu
- Select the learning platform of your department in the dropdown and click on "Log in". It is not necessary to enter a username or password.
- Now go back to the course in which you want to watch videos. Playing should now be possible without any problems.
Alternatively, instead of going to the Fulda University of Applied Sciences Panopto website, you can do the following: Where available, click on a Panopto video (these are indicated by a green video icon) or the Panopto folder (this is indicated by a green folder icon) in the course. This sets the Panopto cookie and after a reload other videos should be playable.
3) Videos in h5p
To view Panopto videos in h5p, the Panopto cookie must already be set in your browser. See 2)
4) Points 1) to 3) can be excluded.
Please contact the e-learning lab with a detailed description of the error (screenshots are welcome) - either by e-mail to elearning(at)hs-fulda.de or come to our online consultation hour (weekdays, 15:00 - 16:00).
To narrow down the error, we need the following information:
- If the error occurred in a course: What is the link to the course?
- Did the error occur with yourself or with someone else?
- Is the error reproducible or did it occur once?
- If the error is reproducible: What exactly did you do that caused the error to occur? Which browser do you use?
- At what time did the error occur?
The best way to do this is to use the activity "Panopto Video". You will learn in detail below how to integrate this activity.
Switch to the editing mode in your course. Then click on "Create activity or material" at the desired location. A pop-up will open. Select "Panopto Video" there.
A new page will appear. Here you will find a field with "Name of activity" and a button with "Select content". First click on "Select content".
A pop-up opens again. There you will find several possibilities to include a video in the course: You can choose one from your videos on the Panopto server, upload an existing video or record a video directly. Once you have decided on a video, click on "Insert".
The name of the video is automatically transferred to the "Activity name" field. You do not need to make any additional settings. However, be sure to leave the "Privacy" item untouched. Then click on "Save and go to course" at the bottom. The link to the video will now be displayed on the course page.
If you would like to integrate the videos you want to upload directly into your course and link them directly in the course, we recommend using the activity "Panopto Video". Go to the editing mode and click on "Create activity or material" and then on "Panopto video". Click on the button "Select content" and switch to the tab "Upload". There you can upload the desired video. Click on "Insert" to upload the video to Panopto and click on "Save and return to course" to embed it directly in your course.
If you do not want to integrate the videos you want to upload directly in your course, we recommend uploading them via the Panopto folder. If you have already integrated it, please open the folder. At the top you will see a green button "Create" next to the search slot. Click on it and then select the item "Upload media". Drag and drop the desired videos into the upload field and then click on "Insert".
For this purpose, the activity "Panopto folder" is available in your course. Instead of embedding a single video, the entire Panopto folder with all its videos will be linked in your course.
Participants in your course get an overview of all the videos stored for this course and can access each one individually.
How to integrate the activity "Panopto folder" is explained in detail below.
Switch on the editing mode in your course. Then click on "Create activity or material" at the desired location. A pop-up will open. Select "Panopto folder".
A new page will appear. In the field "Name of activity" enter the name that should be displayed as link text in the course. An example would be "Overview of all videos in the course". However, you can define the name individually.
You do not need to make any additional settings. In any case, leave the item "Data protection" untouched. After you have clicked "Save and go to course", the Panopto folder of your course will be linked at the selected position.
If you have uploaded a video in a course, the access rights will be set automatically: The video can only be accessed by the participants of this course. Unless you have defined otherwise in the corresponding Panopto folder, you can be sure that these access rights have been applied to every video in your course.
If you still want to check which access rights a particular video has, you can see this under "Share" in the settings of the respective video.
If you have integrated the Panopto folder into your course, you can access the access rights there directly. Simply open the Panopto folder and move the mouse over the desired video. The button "Share" will appear. Click on it. Under "Access rights" you will see the current sharing settings.
An alternative to calling up the video via the Panopto folder is to use the Panopto player. Call up the video there and click on the cogwheel in the top right-hand corner. After switching to the "Share" tab, you can see the "authorised users".
No, it is not enough to hide the activity in the course in the learning platform. In order for students not to have access to it, you have to adjust the availability of the video in Panopto. Instructions on how to do this can also be found on this page. See "How can I hide videos in Panopto that I do not want students to watch yet or no longer?
We recommend recording videos directly with the Panopto Recorder. You must install this on your computer beforehand. You will also find the installation files on this page.
If you want to integrate your video directly into a course, please use the activity "Panopto Video". After you have clicked on Select content, you can record videos directly for the course via the tab "Recording". Enter a name for the video and click on Record. The Panopto Recorder opens. You can add different sources, for example a presentation or a second screen. Click on the red recording button to start recording. Click again to end the recording. After a short processing time, you can edit your video. To do this, click on "Edit" under "Manage recordings" for the corresponding video. This will take you to the edit mode and you can, for example, hide slips of the tongue or unwanted passages for the viewers.
Alternatively, you can also use Panopto Capture to record videos. This is a web application that does not require installation. For example, you can find Panopto Capture in the Panopto folder of your course in the dropdown "Create". You can also go to the Panopto website and click on Create. In both cases you should be logged in to the learning platform.
First make sure that you are logged in to the learning platform of your department. Then please go to the Panopto website and log in - if necessary - after selecting your department.
Click on "Create" at the top next to the search slot and now select "Webcast". In the following steps you will prepare your webcast.
Give your webcast a name and select the folder in which the recording is to be saved. Optionally, you can enter a description. Then press 'Create'.
The session information follows. Here you can define all the essential details for your webcast: for example, the preview image or the access rights. Once you have made all the desired settings, you can integrate the webcast into the learning platform. To do this, use the activity "Panopto Video" as usual. You can now start your webcast at any time.
If you want to start the webcast, please switch back to Panopto. If you no longer have the session information open, please click on Settings for the corresponding webcast. Otherwise you can click on the tab 'Overview' and then on 'Record' under the section 'Actions'. This opens the Panopto recorder. Click on Record there. This activates the link to the stream and your viewers can watch your recording live.
Alternatively, you can also open the Panopto Recorder directly and click on 'Join session'. Now select the prepared session. If necessary, you can make the appropriate technical settings for your video. Please make sure that the check mark at the top of Webcast is set.
Then you can start your webcast by clicking on "Record".
At the top right you will now see how many people are currently watching the livestream. Please note that the webcast may have a delay of several seconds and that discussion contributions on a topic may therefore appear somewhat late.
When your webcast is finished, click on "Stop". The recording will then be automatically uploaded to your selected folder.
Once a video has been uploaded to a course, it can theoretically be viewed by all students enrolled in that course. If you want to prevent this, for example because you want to make changes to the video or add material, you can adjust the availability of the video.
If you have included the Panopto folder in your course, please open it. Hover the mouse over the desired video. Additional functions will appear. Click on "Settings". In the tab "Overview" you will find the item "Availability" at the bottom. There you can set whether a session is to be made available later or is only available until a certain time.
If you have recorded the video via the Panopto recorder, you can also click on "Release" for the corresponding video in the Panopto recorder in the "Manage recordings" tab. Then switch to the "Overview" tab and change the availability of the video as described above.
If you want to share one of your videos for download, call up the settings of the video. If this change is to affect all the videos in your Panopto folder, it makes sense to adjust the settings of the folder. You will find a description of how to do this at the end of this explanation.
First we will look at the sharing of a single video:
Provided you have integrated the Panopto folder into your course, you can directly access the settings of the video there. You simply have to open the Panopto folder and hover the mouse over the desired video. The button "Settings" appears. Click on it. A window will open. You should be in the "Overview" tab. In the first section "Session Information" you will find the function "Downloads" as the last item. Click on the dropdown next to it. You can now further restrict or allow your students to download your video. Select "Authenticated users with access" to make the download button for this video visible to the students in your course. The changes will be saved automatically.
If you have not integrated the Panopto folder, you can open the video in the Panopto player and click on the cogwheel at the top right. The settings for the video will then also open.
If instead you want to share all the videos in a Panopto folder for download, it is advisable to change the settings of the Panopto folder and not the settings of each individual video. However, this only works if you have not previously adjusted the settings of your videos with regard to downloadability. The setting must be set to "Use folder settings" so that the settings can be inherited accordingly from the folder.
Go to the Panopto folder and click on the cogwheel at the top right. In the "Settings" tab you will find the item "Download activated". Adjust the setting according to your wishes. The changes will be saved automatically.
Please note: If you use subfolders within a Panopto folder, they do not inherit the settings of the parent folder. You must therefore also make the download settings there.
If you would like to adjust the access rights for a video uploaded in a course, please go to the sharing settings of the respective video.
If you have integrated the Panopto folder in your course, you can directly access the access rights there. Simply open the Panopto folder and hover the mouse over the desired video. The button "Share" will appear. Click on it. Under "Access rights", "Specific persons" is selected by default. Click on it to adjust the sharing settings. This way you can share your video with everyone within the university or with anyone who has the appropriate link - even outside the university. Your changes will be saved automatically.
If you have not integrated the Panopto folder, please use the Panopto player and click on the cogwheel in the top right-hand corner. The settings menu will open. You can make the settings in the "Share" tab.
To delete a video, the easiest way is via the Panopto folder. If you have integrated this in your course, open it.
Now hover the mouse over the video to be deleted. Action buttons appear. One of them is "Delete". Click on it and confirm the prompt asking if you want to delete the session. The video will then be deleted from the course folder and moved to your recycle bin, where it will remain for a maximum of three months. If you have included the video in the course yourself, e.g. via the activity "Panopto Video", you should also delete it there. It cannot be called up after deletion. Instead, a message appears that the video is no longer available.
If you have accidentally deleted a video, you still have three months to restore the video before it is permanently deleted.
If you have integrated a Panopto folder in the course, click on it. Directly above the list of videos you will find an arrow with a frame on the right, under the item Help. If you hover the mouse over it, the text "Open in Panopto" will appear. Click on it. On the left edge of the page you will see the item "System" at the bottom. Click on it and then select "Recycle bin". There you will find all the videos deleted within the last three months. If you hover the mouse over one of the videos, the button "Restore" appears. Click on it to restore your video in the course. The video will then be moved back to the course folder.
Basically, video sequences cannot be cut out in Panopto. Instead, they are faded out or skipped for the viewer during playback. For you as the creator or editor of the video, the skipped passages of the video material remain, so that you can adjust these skipped passages at any time.
The following explains how to proceed in order to hide individual sequences in the video:
If you have included the Panopto folder in your course, open it. Hover the mouse over the video you want to edit. Various action buttons will appear. Click on the button "Edit". The video opens in edit mode. To cut unwanted sequences from the video, go to the point in the recording from which you want to cut. Click in the timeline and keep the left mouse button pressed. Drag the mouse to the end of the unwanted sequence - that is, to the point where the cut should stop. The greyed-out area will no longer be shown in the recording.
To apply your changes to this video, click on "Apply" in the top right-hand corner.
The so-called "Tasks folder" is available in every course. Unlike in the normal course folder, students can make submissions in the "Assignments folder", i.e. upload media. As teaching staff, you can decide whether the uploaded media can be accessed by everyone or only by the creator.
Please note: Within this folder, students have almost the same rights for their own videos as the teaching staff has for all videos in the course: For example, they can change availabilities and adjust releases or even edit their video. For the teaching staff in the course, the media always remain visible.
If you have not already done so, first of all include the activity "Panopto folder" in your course. Open the Panopto folder. Above the list of videos you will see a row of icons on the right (below "Help"). One of them is a cogwheel. Click on it. A window opens and you are in the "Overview" tab. Under "Tasks Folder" you will find the link "Create Tasks Folder". Click on it. The folder is created and linked under "Tasks Folder". You can now close the window again. In the Panopto folder you will now see a new folder above the videos. This has the name of your course plus the addition "[Tasks]". You can change the name at any time.
If you click on the folder, you will get to the "Assignments folder". There you will later find the media uploaded by your students. If desired, you can now make further settings there. For example, you can set whether students can see and comment on other students' contributions. To access the settings, click on the cogwheel in the row of symbols on the right above the video list. You can then make further settings in the "Settings" tab.
To close a task folder, you have to go back to the folder settings where you have already created the "Task folder". Go to the Panopto folder of your course and click on the cogwheel at the top right of the row of symbols. A window opens and you are in the tab "Overview". Under "Tasks folder" you will find the link to the "Tasks folder" and further down the link "Close". Click on it and confirm the action if you receive a corresponding feedback. The folder is now locked for further actions by your students.
If you would like to give your students the task of submitting media within a course, you can have the videos submitted via Panopto. First of all, create an "Assignments folder" in Panopto. You can find out exactly how this works in the section "How do I set up a "Task folder" in Panopto?". Then create the activity "Task". Make the desired settings. In the section on submission types, you should dispense with the file submission. Instead, tick the box "Text input online". Once you have made all further settings according to your wishes, you can save and switch back to the course. The students will now only have a text field to fill in when they call up the task. You should enter the link to the video in this field. In the following sections you will find instructions to which you can refer your students. They describe how to upload videos to the Panopto "Assignments Folder" and how to link the videos in the corresponding assignment.
In order for your students to easily access the "Assignments Folder", you should integrate the Panopto folder in your course or make it visible to the students if you have not already done so.
If the teaching staff does not wish it otherwise, the link to the video is sufficient to deposit it in an assignment. Of course, you must first have uploaded the video to the corresponding Panopto "Tasks" folder. After uploading, click on the video, wait until the page with the player has opened and then copy the URL. You can then paste the URL back into the assignment in the learning platform. You can then submit the assignment.
You will find the Panopto "Tasks folder" within the Panopto folder in your course. Open the Panopto folder. Directly between the videos and the button for sorting the videos you will find the corresponding "Tasks folder". By default, this has the name of the course plus the addition "[Tasks]". However, the name can be customised. If in doubt, ask the instructor in which folder the media should be uploaded.
Open the Panopto folder. Click on the "Tasks folder". Once this is open, click on the "Create" button in the top centre. Then select "Upload media" in the dropdown. A window will open. Please make sure that the correct folder is selected under "Add files to". Then simply drag and drop the desired media into the window. Wait for the feedback that you can close the window. Afterwards, the video is still being processed by Panopto. Therefore, you cannot call it up immediately. Please wait until the video has been processed.
Even if you do not want to include all the videos of the course in a bundle, it makes sense to include the "Panopto folder" in your course. It can serve as a quick introduction to your videos on Panopto.
The "Panopto Folder" gives you an overview of all the videos in your course. You can edit the videos directly without a long search on the Panopto website as well as view and change the settings and access rights of your videos. To do this, go to the Panopto folder and move the mouse over the video you want to change. The above functions appear.
You can also use the Panopto folder to upload content directly to Panopto without having to embed the video via "Panopto Video".
If you do not want to draw the students' focus to the folder, you can hide the folder in your course at any time. It will then remain usable for you.
First of all: Even though it may seem tempting, please do not change any of the settings made there. All options must remain ticked.
The release of this information is necessary so that Panopto can assign you and your videos to the course. If you change any of the settings stored there, it cannot be ensured that the videos can be successfully integrated and viewed by your students.
If you have just uploaded a video to your course or edited a video, Panopto needs a certain amount of time to process and make the video available. As long as this process continues, the video cannot be played. Instead, the message "This video is not ready" is displayed. Simply wait a few minutes and then call up the video again. To follow the processing progress, you can switch to your Panopto folder - if you have integrated it in the course. There you can see whether the video is still being processed.
If you want to create an interactive video with h5p, you can use a Panopto video. Instead of uploading a video directly to h5p (which we generally advise against due to the file size), you can store the URL to the video in Panopto.
If you have integrated the Panopto folder in your course, please open it. Now move the mouse over the desired video. Action buttons will appear. Click on "Share". If necessary, change the setting under "Access rights" so that "Anyone who has the link" can access the video. To do this, click on the dropdown and select this item.
This step is necessary because otherwise h5p will not be able to communicate reliably with Panopto and the video may not be able to play under certain circumstances.
You will find the link to the video via the access rights. Please copy this link and paste it into the h5p interface under video files. You can then edit your h5p content as usual.
If you have further questions about Panopto, you can also ask them directly in our daily E-Learning office hour (3:00 pm - 4:00 pm).
The contracts with the company Panopto were concluded with the company's branch in London.
