The FISU World University Games 2025 (WUG), the world's largest sports festival of the year, kicked off on 16 July 2025. A total of 18 different sports were held in the cities of Duisburg, Bochum, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen, Hagen and Berlin and around 8,500 athletes from over 150 countries were expected to take part. The participants were competitive athletes who are often regarded as "the stars of tomorrow". They must be a maximum of 25 years old and enrolled at a university.

The WUG 2025 was framed by a comprehensive cultural and scientific programme. In addition to the sporting activities, the event focussed on international and interdisciplinary exchange between universities and students from all over the world, as sport at universities has many different facets.
