High moor hike to the border triangle

Early on Saturday morning, 23 May 2026, a large hiking group consisting of students, employees of Fulda University of Applied Sciences and other hiking enthusiasts met at Fulda train station. After a brief check-in and a welcome with a short explanation of the planned itinerary for the day, we boarded the regional train on time for Gersfeld - the starting point of our hike. The weather forecast promised sunny weather and warm temperatures.

Once we arrived in Gersfeld, the 40.6-kilometre hike started immediately, as the day's schedule was tightly planned. The route first managed to take us over the Mostberg at an altitude of 807 metres and along the Red Moor. This meant that the first and longest ascent had already been mastered - from then on, the route was mostly flat to slightly hilly.

In the second section, the route managed to take us through pleasantly shady forest passages past the Ulster and Goldquelle springs to Schornhecke. Before reaching the Stirnberg at 902 metres above sea level, we were treated to an impressive view of the Wasserkuppe, the Schafstein and the Hessian Rhön biosphere reserve. Of course, we couldn't miss the Rhön sheep😊 on our tour.

Around midday, we reached the border triangle where Hesse, Thuringia and Bavaria meet. We took our first and only major break at the Black Moor information centre. Refreshed, we continued on to the Black Moor nature trail (rain moor) and along the boardwalk through the impressive raised bog area. Of course, a visit to the observation tower was a must - from there we had an excellent view of the Black Moor and the surrounding landscape. The nature trail also offered lots of interesting information about how a rain moor is structured and functions. The path along the boardwalk, past the large bog eye and other impressive parts of the bog nature trail, was particularly popular.

Afterwards, the route - slightly adapted - managed us back towards Gersfeld. The warm and sunny weather as well as the long hiking route demanded the last strength of all participants on the way back.

We made it! We finally arrived back in Gersfeld at around 5 pm. We were delighted to be able to travel back to Fulda on the pleasantly cool train, as our water supplies were almost exhausted.
