Summer hike in the Rhön

12 Aug 2026

From the Wasserkuppe via the Pferdskopf to Lake Guckaisee with RHÖNSTEPS.

Early on Sunday morning, a small group of students, staff and hiking enthusiasts got together to explore the Rhön. After the bus journey, we set off on our walk from Abtsroda. From there, the first climb took us to the Abtsroda fountain, where we were able to cool off briefly in the summery temperatures. Unfortunately, we skipped the summer toboggan run this time – perhaps we’ll make up for it on our next walk to the Wasserkuppe.

We then continued through the pleasantly shady and cool forest at the Wasserkuppe towards the Pferdskopf. Both at the Wasserkuppe and on the Pferdskopf, the sunny weather treated us to a magnificent view over the Rhön. Using a telescope, we were able to take a closer look at various landmarks in the surrounding area. Among other things, the distances to the Rotes Moor (4.9 km), the Kreuzberg (13.5 km) and Point Alpha (19 km) were displayed. We were also able to watch a falcon for a while, whilst a paraglider soared over the landscape.

Passing the Goldborn spring, we then walked down to our destination, Lake Guckaisee. There, we spent a long, relaxing break on our picnic blankets. We unpacked the food we’d brought with us, along with plenty of treats. Whilst eating together, there was sufficient time for conversation and relaxation. Some took the opportunity, at their own risk, to cool off in Lake Guckaisee. Others read a book, closed their eyes for a while or simply enjoyed some time to themselves. A few acrobatic stunts and group warm-up exercises also provided some variety – so there was something for everyone.

After our extended stay at Lake Guckaisee, we continued cross-country to Gersfeld. Our next destination was the grand anniversary celebration, ‘150 Years of the Rhönklub’, in Gersfeld Castle Park. There, we were treated to a historical journey through time, a re-enactment of the founding of the Rhönklub in 1876, and performances by various music and dance groups.

To round off the day, some of the group visited the Gersfeld outdoor swimming pool near Gersfeld Wildlife Park. The outdoor pool could also be visited again on a private basis at the end of a future summer hike. The others rounded off the day in a relaxed manner with an ice cream or coffee and cake before we travelled back to Fulda together on the regional train.

Many thanks to everyone who took part in this varied tour and helped make the day such a success! I wish all students and staff at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, as well as all fellow hiking enthusiasts, a wonderful and relaxing summer.

Best regards,
Nils
