Sustainable development within the framework of limited resources is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Sustainable action takes into account the ecological, social and economic dimensions and concerns both the individual and the institutional level. As places of education and research, universities have a special responsibility. In its guiding principle(s), Fulda University of Applied Sciences is committed to sustainable development in teaching, research and as a facility.
With its sustainability strategy, which was developed by university members by mid-2023, Fulda University of Applied Sciences has set ambitious and important goals for achieving sustainability in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
As a cross-sectional task, sustainability affects the actions of all university members and is supported by the Sustainability Office administrative unit as an internal and external point of contact.

Fulda University of Applied Sciences supports forward-looking learning of specialised knowledge and the acquisition of future skills. It strengthens sustainable development in the content of teaching in order to train students as multipliers for social transformation. In addition, the HFD strengthens equal access to education and supports students in their individual educational biographies.
Many study programmes at Fulda University of Applied Sciences are allocated to different aspects of sustainability. For information on the study programmes you are interested in, you can get in touch with the relevant contact person directly.
With the Sustainability Certificate, Fulda University of Applied Sciences is offering its students an additional qualification in the field of sustainability, starting in the summer semester 2025. The certificate includes a central foundation module as well as advanced modules from each student's own study programme.
Sustainability-related topics for theses can be found in all study programmes.
There are also always opportunities to write a project or thesis on various topics at the Sustainability Office. There is also the opportunity to complete an internship - please get in touch with the contact persons at the Sustainability Office.
Regional organisations with a focus on sustainability also offer opportunities for theses, e.g. the UNESCO biosphere reserve Rhön.
Fulda University of Applied Sciences organises its operations in an ecologically, socially and economically responsible manner. It aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, use resources sparingly and support biodiversity. It is committed to respectful coexistence on campus and supports equal opportunities and diversity, family friendliness and healthy working and study conditions.
The university's integrated climate protection concept (2021) makes an active contribution to local climate protection.
The campus garden on the grounds of the old campus supports biodiversity and is a participatory and community project organised by the Campus Garden Working Group for all members of the university.
A sustainable mobility concept is currently being generated for the university. There are already many projects and approaches to support sustainable mobility.
Since 2022, the university has organised the annual FahrRad semester in the summer semester under the motto "Cycling for health and climate".

Fulda University of Applied Sciences pursues a participatory sustainability strategy, supported by appropriate governance structures. This includes the involvement of all stakeholders as well as PR to structurally anchor sustainability and increase the visibility of its sustainability efforts.
The Sustainability Office (NHB) administrative unit serves as a point of contact for all university members and external parties on sustainability issues relating to the university.
A Committee for Sustainable Development (KNE) was set up in the Chancellor's department in winter semester 2023/24 to involve all interest and status groups in the implementation of the sustainability strategy at the university.
Each department has a contact person for sustainability who acts as a multiplier. They also represent their department on the Committee for Sustainable Development:

In the sustainability strategy adopted in 2023, Fulda University of Applied Sciences commits to sustainability as an overall institutional task in all performance dimensions.
In 2024, Fulda University of Applied Sciences published its first sustainability report in accordance with the University Sustainability Code (HS-DNK).
The Sustainability Office publishes a newsletter on sustainability at Fulda University of Applied Sciences twice a semester.
Fulda University of Applied Sciences focuses its research and transfer on sustainable development with a multi-perspective and transdisciplinary approach. It supports collaboration with practitioners for sustainable solutions, strengthens sustainable research structures and processes and supports networking in order to drive social transformation towards greater sustainability.
