Climate protection

at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences

Whether it's periods of drought, extreme summer heat or heavy rainfall - global climate change is also becoming increasingly noticeable in our region and climate protection is a key challenge of our time. Based on the provisions of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, the German federal government has set the goal of achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045. In the Hessian Sustainability Strategy (2009), the state government of Hesse set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality for the state's facilities by 2030 . This also includes the locations of Hesse's universities and thus Fulda University of Applied Sciences.

Fulda University of Applied Sciences also sees itself as a role model and, due to its importance in research and teaching, would like to play a special role in achieving national and international climate protection goals. It therefore drew up an integrated climate protection concept for the first time in 2021, which was updated in 2025.

Climate protection concept

The university's updated climate protection concept was unanimously adopted by the Senate on 10 December 2025 and approved for further implementation.

What does the concept say? Fulda University of Applied Sciences is striving to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 in accordance with the state targets and is guided by the state strategy "Reduction of greenhouse gases before substitution before compensation". The university adopted a climate protection concept for the first time in the Senate in November 2021. It contains 10 fields of action and 122 individual measures, which have now been brought up to date. The greatest leverage for reducing the university's greenhouse gas emissions lies in the area of heat supply on the existing campus, if the university is considered within its boundaries - and in the area of car commuting, if we look beyond the boundaries of the university.

The measures in the fields of action were each developed with the broad participation of university members and are intended to allocate the path to climate neutrality by 2030, which the university aims to achieve in accordance with the specifications and balance limits of the state of Hesse.
