What makes the HAW professorship so attractive?

A brief reply from Prof. Karim Khakzar, President of Fulda University:
“In my opinion, the strong appeal of a professorial position at a university of applied sciences lies in the fact that professors can teach and carry out applied research autonomously and have a high degree of freedom and creative scope – always providing a link between theory and practice.”
By setting up and testing a new doctoral research group “Health and Nutrition”, Fulda University of Applied Sciences is systematically helping junior researchers in health-relevant and nutrition-related fields, where there is an obvious lack of eligible candidates, to qualify for a professorship by pursuing a doctoral degree. Organisationally, the new doctoral research group is part of the two Scientific Centres: the Scientific Centre for Public Health Fulda (PHZF) and the Scientific Centre for Nutrition, Food and Sustainable Supply Systems (ELVe).

By setting up and testing a new doctoral research group “Human Rights and Social Justice”, Fulda University of Applied Sciences offers students an application-based way to pursue a doctoral degree, supplementing the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences’ existing consecutive study programmes. The doctoral research group targets junior researchers working in the areas of social law and human rights and also in the social sciences, and organisationally, will be part of the existing Graduate Centre of Social Sciences (PZSW).

In cooperation with two regional partner institutions – Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft (DLG) e.V. and antonius: gemeinsam begegnen gGmbH – two tandem programmes are being carried out over a four-year period to systematically prepare female postdocs from the Department of Food Technology for a professorship at a university of applied sciences. The specific cooperation projects enable female researchers to gain the professional experience they need to qualify for appointment to the rank of university professor and simultaneously build their academic skills.

By establishing a total of six “focus professorships” in four departments, Fulda University hopes to make professorships as attractive as possible, especially in areas where there is a lack of applicants. By reducing teaching obligations over a four-year period, the focus professorships appeal specifically to candidates with strong research skills who will raise the University’s research and transfer profile but also contribute towards the development of new, innovative teaching concepts. This highly attractive combination together with the independent right to award doctorates is seen as a competitive advantage over other universities of applied sciences.
In the Equality and Diversity Office, this sub-project systematically supplements existing support structures – most of them subject-specific – for junior researchers of all qualification levels at Fulda University with individual consultations and information and networking services. One special focus is helping researchers reconcile the demands of an academic career path up to UAS professorship level with personal circumstances and supporting junior researchers in all their diversity throughout the career-building process.

In future, an additional position in Human Resources Management will offer the university departments dedicated support throughout the professorial appointment procedure. This member of staff will support and advise the Professorial Appointments Committee, help review the applications of shortlisted candidates and advise the Professorial Appointments Committee on procedural matters. Conceptually, the focus includes the long-term optimisation of processes and in this context the introduction of an applicant management system. These professionalisation strategies will help optimise processes in the long term, maintain quality and save on resources.

By systematically addressing potential candidates abroad, helping departments formulate international job advertisements and actively helping newly appointed professors and visiting researchers from abroad deal with formalities and legal requirements relating to the start of their career, Fulda University aims to increase its share of international professors and promote the internationalisation of the University as a whole. Colleagues involved in the project also offer support and assistance during visits from international delegations.

In a new further qualification programme developed and tested in cooperation with the University of Kassel and aimed specifically at doctoral students and postdocs from both institutions as well as external professional practitioners, participants acquire competencies and skills that give them structured preparation for the rank of a professorship at a university of applied sciences (UAS) and therefore generally increase the pool of applicants.

In agreement with all universities of applied sciences and vocational universities organised in the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), Fulda University is coordinating a nationwide media campaign. Its main goal is to give professorial positions at universities of applied sciences greater visibility and provide potential candidates with comprehensive information about the career path, the merit and distinctive features of the UAS as a type of higher education institution.
