Borrowing and returning items

How do I borrow items?

As a rule, library items are borrowed at both locations via the self-checkout terminals.

Special library items, e.g. e-book readers, media boxes or games etc. must be borrowed from the service desk.

You can borrow a maximum of 40 library items, including a maximum of 15 AV media and 15 objects (e.g. Tonies, games, Tolino).

Children up to the age of 13 can borrow a maximum of 20 library items, including a maximum of 15 AV media and 15 objects (e.g. Tonies and games).

How long can I borrow?

In principle, all library items can be borrowed for 28 days and the lending period can be renewed if necessary.

Journals are an exception; these only have a lending period of 14 days at the Heinrich-von-Bibra-Platz location. They are not available for loan at the Campus location.

Longer lending periods

Distance learning students of the Fulda University of Applied Sciences

  • You can apply for a lending period of 44 days.
  • You will receive the longer lending periods if you fill in the application form on your e-learning platform and hand it in at the campus location during service hours. We will then change your status as soon as possible.

Please note:

  • The longer lending periods do not apply to literature from the public library's stock (such as novels, DVDs and non-fiction) at the Heinrich-von-Bibra-Platz location.

How are lending periods renewed?

You can check the lending periods of the library items you have borrowed via the link My account link on the HLB website or in the FILIP search portal as follows:

  • Enter your library card number and password and click on the "Login" button.
  • Then click on "Checked Out Items, renew". You will receive a list of your library items and can renew them if necessary.
  • Please check immediately whether all your requested renewals have been successful.

Please note:

  • The new lending period is calculated from the day of the renewal in each case.
  • You cannot renew library items after the lending period has expired.
  • Renewals are possible three times.
  • Library items that have been reserved by other users cannot be renewed.
  • If your account is charged with debts such as overdue fines, all library items you have borrowed cannot be renewed.
  • If the validity of your library card is expired, renewals are not possible.

When are reminders sent?

If you do not return an item after the lending period has expired, you will receive a reminder.

For students and non-registered students at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, reminders are sent to their university email addresses.

All other users will receive reminders via their email address stored in the lending system. If no email address has been entered, reminders will be sent by post, third reminders will be sent with a postal delivery certificate.

How do I return borrowed items?

As a rule, all library items can be returned at both locations, regardless of which location you borrowed them from. Exceptions are library items that you have received via interlibrary loan and special media. These must still be returned to the service desk at the location where they were borrowed on loan.

At the Heinrich-von-Bibra-Platz location, please return the library items at the self-service return terminal.

At the campus location, use the self-service return terminal in the foyer opposite the lockers or on the outside of the library building (facing the main entrance: right side of the building). Please insert the items one after the other into the slot.
At the outside return terminal items can also be returned outside opening times .

The following applies at both locations:

  • You do not need a library card to return items.
  • You should print out a voucher for all returned library items and keep it in a safe place.
  • Items that you have received via interlibrary loan and library items that you have borrowed at the service desks are not eligible for return via the automatic return terminal.

Return by post:

In exceptional cases, it is also possible to return items by post. Please note:

  • Library items may not arrive at the library on time, so overdue fines may be incurred.
  • We are not liable if library items are damaged or lost in transit.

What needs to be considered in the event of loss/damage to library items?

Please check the condition and completeness of the library items before borrowing them.

Ask the library staff to confirm any damage and missing supplements. Otherwise it can be assumed that you have received the item in perfect condition and complete.

For lost or damaged library items, you must pay compensation in the amount of the replacement value or the cost of repairing or reconstructing the item and pay an administrative charge per item.

If you have lost or damaged an item, please submit the replacement declaration together with the damaged item.
