School programmes
School programmes are publications from grammar schools and other, usually secondary schools. Originally they contained the programme of the public examination - hence the name - but from the middle of the 18th century an academic treatise was often added. From the second quarter of the 19th century, they increasingly also contained a report on the previous school year according to a predetermined scheme.
In the 19th century, there was an intensive exchange of documents between schools, partly on the basis of decrees issued by the ministries in charge. Collections of school programmes can be found in numerous school libraries and academic libraries.
School programmes flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries. After the First World War, this form of publication disappeared, with a few exceptions.
The HLB has a collection of around 22,500 school programmes, the vast majority of which date back to the 19th century.
If you would like to know more about school programmes on the internet, we recommend the Giessen University Library website.

The database lists a total of around 70,000 treatises from school programmes in Germany (within the borders of the 19th century), Austria-Hungary and Switzerland. In addition to the stock of the Giessen University Library, other libraries are also listed. - The database will be continued in the HeBIS network.
