Schwank Foundation

In 1886, Adam Joseph Schwank bequeathed his scholarly library to the Fulda State Library by way of a donation agreement. In accordance with the donor's wishes, the 7,328 volumes are shelved separately in the Closed Stacks. The titles are all documented online, and there is also a systematic "Realkatalog der Schwankschen Stiftung" (catalogue of the Schwank Foundation), which was compiled by Carl Scherer around 1910.

Schwank's collection, who was a member of a Masonic lodge, contains numerous valuable and rare titles. Its specialisations are in the fields of law, Hessian history and literature, "Fuldensien" and Freemasonry.

25 partly rarer but incomplete series of periodicals from the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Aus der Mansarde (1860-1862) or Das Journal von und für Deutschland (1784-1789), can be found for example under General Science. The Linguistics and Literature group, German Language section, contains numerous first editions of the classics, a series of almanacs and paperbacks as well as a good collection of Hessian and Fuldian writers. The subject of education is dominated by writings on university history and studentica. Theology is represented by 341 prints, with a specialisation in works printed in Fulda. In the field of art history, an anthology with 677 cut and pasted woodcuts, mainly from the 16th century, is particularly noteworthy.

Schwank's historical and political interest, who was actively involved in the revolution of 1848, is documented by four volumes of pamphlets from the years 1812-1814 and around 50 accounts of the period between the Wars of Independence and 1848.

Works from Schwank's foundation with a Fulda or Hessian connection have already been digitised and are available online on FulDig, the HLB's digitisation server.
