Publication fund

Since 1 October 2017, the HLB has been supporting researchers at Fulda University of Applied Sciences who wish to publish their articles in open access journals by providing an open access publication fund.

The fund covers the costs for article processing charges (APC), which are charged to authors when publishing in some gold open access journals.

Applications for funding can be submitted informally by email or via our online form at any time until the available budget is used up.

Within the DEAL consortium, separate agreements exist with the publishers Wiley and Springer Nature. Please note the instructions for publishing with DEAL (→"What do I have to do?").

The Open Access Publication Fund is awarded in accordance with the Allocation Guidelines for Open Access Publishing of the German Research Foundation(DFG form):

  • The "Submitting Author"/"Corresponding Author" is a member or affiliated person of Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
  • The article is published in a Gold Open Access Journal, which makes all its contributions directly accessible free of charge and without restrictions.
  • The maximum funding amount is 2,000 € (incl. 19% VAT) per article. This corresponds to a maximum invoice amount of 1,680 EUR (as 19% VAT is paid by the Fulda University of Applied Sciences). This also applies to foreign invoices, which may only contain the net amount (i.e. without calculating VAT). Please state the VAT No. of Fulda University of Applied Sciences (DE 166496730).
  • The journal has a quality assurance procedure recognised in the respective subject (usually peer review) and is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
  • In your article, you refer to the support by our fund: "This publication was financially supported by the Open Access Publication Fund of Fulda University of Applied Sciences. For English-language publications: "We acknowledge support by the Open Access Publishing Fund of Hochschule Fulda - University of Applied Sciences."
  • All funded publications are published on FulDok - Fulda Document Server as well as documented on the website.

Not funded:

  • Hybrid Open Access models of subscription-based journals.
  • Co-funding / invoice splitting of publication fees that exceed the funding ceilings.

Applications received will be checked for compliance with the award criteria. We recommend a brief contact to clarify the eligibility of your article.

  • Hybrid open access models for subscription-based journals.
  • Co-financing / invoice splitting of publication fees that exceed the maximum funding amounts.

Incoming applications will be checked for compliance with the award criteria. We recommend that you contact us to clarify the eligibility of your article.

Applications can be submitted as soon as the article has been accepted for publication in an open access journal.
If an invoice is already available at the time of application, it can be submitted directly with the application (copy of invoice as PDF). Please ensure the following points:

  • Fulda University of Applied Sciences (department/institution) is the invoice recipient and the invoice shows net amounts.
  • Especially for invoicing parties within the EU, you have indicated the VAT No. of the Hochschule Fulda (DE 166496730).

If you have already clarified the eligibility of your article with the Open Access Officer, you are also welcome to specify the HLB as the invoice recipient:

Hochschule Fulda - University of Applied Sciences
Hochschul- und Landesbibliothek
Open Access Officer
openaccess@hlb.hs-fulda.de
Leipziger Straße 123
36037 Fulda
USt-IdNr. DE 166496730

In this case, please ensure that the VAT No. of Fulda University of Applied Sciences (DE 166496730) is stated and that no tax is shown. We will then settle the invoice directly via Financial Management after another check.

Please remember to apply for OA funds as part of third-party funded projects (e.g. DFG form 52.01 - 06/20 → 2.6 Project-internal publication funds, p. 6) and to use these funds as a priority.

All funded open access articles with a free licence are additionally published by the HLB on FulDok - Fulda Document Server.

In order to make the price development of fee-based OA publishing transparent, the HFD's Publication Fund participates in the OpenAPC initiative.
