In August 1992, the "Gesellschaft der Freunde der Hessischen Landesbibliothek Fulda e.V." was founded as a non-profit organisation with the aim of preserving, supporting and promoting the Hessian State Library with its valuable book collection from a period of more than 1,200 years at the Bibra-Platz location.
The merger of the state library with the university library in Fulda in 2001 expanded the book collection and with it the library's tasks and requirements. The name of the Friends and Sponsors of the Fulda University of Applied Sciences Library was changed to "Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Hochschul- und Landesbibliothek Fulda e.V." in 2001 in response to these changes.
