HLSB Fulda: Space for democracy

This year, the HLSB Fulda is particularly focussed on democracy. As a central meeting point and third place, we support dialogue, diversity and community. We are committed to an open society based on free access to knowledge and support people in forming their own, well-founded opinions. We support exchange and mutual respect. This year, we are offering a wide range of different offers and courses on the topic of democracy.

Film "The finest hour of her life"

This historical drama sheds light on the tireless struggle of lawyer Elisabeth Selbert, who fought against enormous resistance to enshrine equal rights in the Basic Law in 1948.

In the midst of a post-war society characterised by conservative role models, the SPD MP fought tenaciously for the decisive sentence: "Men and women have equal rights." The film paints an exciting portrait of one of the four "Mothers of the Basic Law" and makes it clear that democratic laws often had to be fought for with great effort against the spirit of the times.

This and other films are available free of charge to all HLSB users via the filmfriend platform.

The local-o-mat

In February and March 2026, HLSB Fulda is offering a new political study programme. Similar to the well-known Wahl-O-Mat, the lokal-o-mat allows you to find out about the political positions of the parties standing for election in the 2026 local elections in Fulda.
Technical devices and accompanying information materials will be available at the HLSB locations so that you can test the offer at your leisure. Alternatively, the offer from the Hessian State Centre for Political Education and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) can be accessed via your personal device at the following link.

How local elections work

Local elections will be held in Hesse on Sunday, 15 March. These elections have some special features that give voters additional opportunities to exert influence: Accumulation and panasching. This will be explained in the course organised by the VHS Stadt Fulda in cooperation with the HLSB on Friday, 13 February at 17:30 in the Fulda Galerie branch. The event will also look at the possibilities and limits of local politics. All eligible voters are invited.
