The Hessian Bibliography is a regional bibliography and a service provided by Hessian libraries for anyone interested in Hesse's history and present, its culture and nature, its personalities or other Hessian topics.

The database lists more than 250,000 titles of publications relating to Hesse, Hessian regions, cities, municipalities, people and topics. It is updated and expanded daily.

The basis for the evaluation are the holdings of the Hessian deposit copy libraries ULB Darmstadt, UB Frankfurt, HLSB Fulda, UB-LMB Kassel and HLB Wiesbaden.

As a rule, the literature listed in the online catalogue of the Hessian Bibliography is available in at least one of the Hessian academic libraries or in the DNB.

The desired literature can be ordered directly from the stock of the respective library. If the desired title is not available in the home library, it can be ordered via interlibrary loan.

History

The first Hessian complete bibliography to be published was "Schrifttum zur Geschichte und geschichtlichen Landeskunde von Hessen" by K. E. Demandt Part 1.-3. 1965-1968. K. E. Demandt's work was continued by W. Leist and W. Podehl, supported by the academic libraries in Kassel, Fulda, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Marburg and Giessen. Four volumes (period 1965-1976) were published under the same title "Schrifttum zur Geschichte und geschichtlichen Landeskunde des Landes Hessen".

All the title references listed there have been included in full in the online catalogue of the Hessian Bibliography since 2015.

In the 1970s, the bibliography was redesigned and the "Hessian Bibliography" was published as a cooperation between the academic libraries in Kassel, Fulda, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Marburg and Giessen. A total of 24 volumes were published between 1977 and 2000.

In 2004, the Hessian Bibliography was integrated into the Hessian Library Information System HeBIS. Since then, users of the bibliography have been able to access both the current holdings information and the ordering options in the HeBIS network.

Regional and national networking

For research in the Hessian Bibliography, the State Historical Information System of Hesse (LAGIS) offers its own search mask, which enables access to the Hessian Bibliography.
The evidence there is indexed with the classification system and keywords of the Hessian Bibliography and enables direct searches for thematically relevant literature in the catalogue of the Hessian Bibliography.

The Hessian Bibliography is also part of the "Virtual German State Bibliography". Here you can search all state bibliographies simultaneously or in selection via a common search interface.

The Hessian Bibliography is linked to the "Virtual Library of Biology". This offers users additional biology titles from the Hessian Bibliography, which are made available via a special subject section of the Hessian Bibliography database.
