Open Access Books
The HLSB uses its publication fund to support not only articles in open access journals, but also open access books.
Monographs and edited volumes that have not previously appeared anywhere else (first publications) are eligible for funding. Excellent dissertations can also be funded, provided they were written at Fulda University of Applied Sciences within the scope of the independent right to award doctorates and are published as a monograph in Gold Open Access.
Subsequent open access publication of previously published titles will only be funded in justified individual cases. The funding decision is the responsibility of the HLSB. In general, funding is limited to one publication per person per year.
Applications are processed and approved in the order in which they are received until the funds have been exhausted.
- Members and affiliates (Link in german) of the University of Fulda are eligible to apply if they are responsible for paying the publication fees as authors or editors.
- Monographs and edited volumes are funded with a gross amount of up to 5,000 euros.
- The publication must have undergone the usual quality assurance processes in the respective discipline.
- Publications and publishers should fulfil the quality standards (Link in german) for open access monographs and edited volumes of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Universitätsverlage.
- The publisher should be listed as an open access publisher, e.g. in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) or as a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).
- The authors or editors only transfer simple rights of use to the publisher, but not exclusive rights of use.
- The work must be freely accessible under an open licence - preferably CC BY 4.0(https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) - permanently, free of charge and worldwide without technical barriers (e.g. registration) immediately upon publication.
- The publication must include a reference to the support provided by our Open Access Publication Fund:
- For German-language publications, please use: ‘Diese Publikation wurde durch den Open-Access-Publikationsfonds der Hochschule Fulda – University of Applied Sciences gefördert.’
- For English-language publications, please use: ‘This publication was funded by the Open Access Publishing Fund of Hochschule Fulda - University of Applied Science
- All funded Open Access articles with a free licence are also published by the HLSB on FulDok. Please also remember to enter your publication in the university bibliography of Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
Please contact the HLSB Open Access team as early as possible to clarify the following questions:
- Is my planned publication eligible for funding?
- Does the publication fund have sufficient resources?
The funding commitment is valid for 12 months. If the publication does not take place within this time frame, a new application for funding must be submitted.
An application for funding should be submitted at the latest when negotiations with a publisher begin.
Please ensure that the publisher states both its own VAT identification number (USt-IdNr or VAT-ID) and that of Fulda University of Applied Sciences (DE 166 496 730) on the invoice. It is also important that the invoice shows that the publisher has not yet paid any VAT (e.g. by stating ‘VAT % 0.00’).
Please remember to apply for open access funding as part of third-party funded projects and to prioritise the use of these funds (see, for example, DFG form 52.01 - 06/20, here: Section 2.6 Internal project publication funds (in german)).
