COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES
This seminar is designed to introduce students at all levels of German proficiency to German history and culture (1871-present) and to the concepts of intercultural communication and competence. The course is built around questions of German identity as they are addressed in historical and contemporary contexts. Students will examine issues of prejudice, stereotypes, and the challenges of intercultural communication and work creatively through discussions about art, literature, culture, and politics. Students will also examine culture firsthand through academic excursions locally, regionally, and in Berlin.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Global production chains and foreign direct investment flows have accelerated as globalization has reached all corners of the world. Presence in emerging markets have become a necessity for major corporations as well as smaller companies. As a result, managers from around the world will have to operate in competitive and diverse international settings. In a competitive environment, managers must develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand the international context in which firms compete and to operate effectively in cross-national interactions. These skills are necessary for managers operating abroad or at home because both will most likely have to manage an increasing level of workforce diversity in local as well as global organizations. We will read articles, case studies and chapters and learn about globalization, global production, and foreign direct investment through country studies while also discussing  topics such as ethics, culture, diversity, leadership, cross-cultural communication, and human resource management.

Migration, Development, and Sustainability

Dr. Sascha Krannich (Gießen University, Germany) offers a course on the topics of migration, development, and sustainability. Seminar participants will get an introduction into basic terms, theories, and empirical findings in the frame of the interconnections of migration, development, and sustainability. Here, we will discuss and analyze current trends of global migration, transnational forms of migrant activities as well as central indicators of human development and its sustainability in countries of origin, and how these movements fit into the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. For this purpose, various speakers are invited into the seminar to share their experience and expertise in these fields with us, including representatives of the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) and transnational migrant organizations. The course also includes a three-day simulation game from the field of international development cooperation, and several field trips to relevant institutions and cities, including Frankfurt and Weimar.

Learn German! German is a fascinating language and enables you to talk to people in Germany and Austria as well as in parts of Switzerland, Italy, France and Belgium. There are also many people in Eastern Europe who are speaking German as a foreign language.

German language courses accompany the seminar programme. ISU Fulda offers German language courses on five levels according to the Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR):

The programme fee covers one language course at your level including all course materials. The  syllabus of German Language course (beginner level) can be found here.

In order to allocate you to the right course, there will be an assessment test at the beginning of our programme which all participants should take. This will help us to find the right level for you. You can be certain that you will be placed in a course which is neither too difficult nor too easy for you.

You will be taught by highly qualified instructors of German as a foreign language who will pay special attention to your personal learning needs and interests.
We reserve the right to adjust German course levels according to the numbers and skills of participants.

Visit the capital of Germany! Berlin is not only the political capital of Germany, but also the historical and cultural center of Germany. We will have a city tour, see the famous remains of the Berlin wall, visit the German Bundestag (lower chamber) at the Reichstag building, the Holocaust Memorial… We will have plenty of time to go shopping or just enjoy day and night life in Berlin!

The Point Alpha memorial is an authentic scene of the Cold War and a unique testimony to four decades of contemporary history. This is where the outposts of NATO and the Warsaw Pact faced each other until 1990. The former "Observation Post Alpha" (Point Alpha for short) was one of the most important observation bases of the U.S. armed forces in Europe and one of the hottest points in the Cold War.

Field Trip Rhön Mountains Hike to Kreuzberg (16^th of July 2024)

Experience hiking in German mountains!

Wasserkuppe-  At 950 m, the Wasserkuppe, the mountain of aviators, is the highest mountain in Hesse and the Rhön. The much visited elevation is worth a visit at any time of the year. The mountain touches the Hessian municipalities of Gersfeld (gliding museum, Fulda spring, summit) and Poppenhausen (Wasserkuppe).

Explore Munich, Bavaria’s capital, which is home to centuries-old buildings and numerous museums. The city is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration and its beer halls, including the famed Hofbräuhaus, founded in 1589. In the Altstadt (Old Town), central Marienplatz square contains landmarks such as Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (town hall), with a popular glockenspiel show that chimes and reenacts stories from the 16th century.

Explore Würzburg -   the "Pearl on the Main" - as it is also sometimes called. Würzburg is located directly on the river, it is one of the youngest cities in Germany with a population of around 130,000 and is home to many sights.

Come visit with us the town where the poets Goethe and Schiller and the composers Bach and Liszt lived and worked. Weimar is the birth place of the architectural style “Bauhaus” as well as of the first German republic. The darkest years of German history, however, are also represented here: At the Memorial Site Buchenwald you will learn about the horrors of the National Socialist regime.
