Preparing to study

You do not yet meet the language requirements or are not sure what to expect in a university study programme? Whether you want to make language or subject-related preparations for your studies, Fulda University has the right course for you.

Fulda Pre-Study

Fulda Pre-Study is the best, most comprehensive option for international applicants who want to prepare for studies at Fulda University. The programme lasts a whole semester and is always run in the summer semester. The programme includes

  • Intensive German courses at various levels from beginners to DSH preparation courses
  • English courses to develop existing English skills – particularly important for applicants who want to apply for study programmes that are conducted in German but also require English skills as part of the study programme is conducted in English (e.g. International Business Administration)
  • Bridging courses in the chosen subject (in German and English)
  • Introduction to the methods and techniques of academic study at a German university
  • Information about studying in Germany (in German and English)
  • Specially for refugees: buddying. An experienced student from your subject area acts as your “buddy”, introducing you to the practicalities of studying at university and student life and giving you help and support throughout the entire semester.

German courses

You are not yet sure what subject you want to study at Fulda University but would like to acquire the necessary German skills? If that is the case, the intensive German courses are just what you need. They are offered at various levels and prepare you specifically for admission to an academic course of study. The other people on your course will all be future students. In contrast to Fulda Pre-Study, you will focus entirely and solely on learning German.

If you have no German skills, you should allow at least one year to reach DSH 2 standard. This is the level that you need for admission to a university study programme in German. In terms of time, that means around 1,000 – 1,200 hours of German lessons.

However, you should learn German even if you want to enrol in a study programme in English at Fulda University. German skills will help you to integrate and will make campus and city life easier.

As most study programmes begin in the winter semester (which starts in October), the summer semester (which starts in April) is the perfect time to attend an intensive German course.

Duration: 1 semester, from mid-April to the end of July

Hours per week: 20 – 24

Application deadline: From now until 11 April

Fees for German courses: Refugees do not have to pay any fees as they are covered by the federal state of Hesse.

Matriculation as a guest student: In this case, you are not given a semester ticket. However, Fulda University checks whether you can matriculate as a regular student (with a semester ticket).

Matriculation fees: Refugees do not have to pay any fees to matriculate as guest students as they are covered by Fulda University.
