Reading Circle: Critical Migration Studies

de/en

We cordially invite fellow PhD candidates, department members, and students to link up with our reading group in the upcoming winter semester. Our general aim is to discuss theoretical and empirical work with relevance to the field of sociological and anthropological migration and refugee studies. We are engaged in research on migration-related phenomena and experiences across sending, transit, and destination countries in Europe and the Global South. We are particularly interested in discussing ethnographic work and its capacity to weave together agentive and structural dimensions in the study of migration. If you are interested, please get in touch (contacts below). We will collectively discuss and decide on the literature for the winter semester in the first weeks of October. The meetings will take place online.

Dates:

30.10.23, 6:30 pm (CET)
29.11.23, 6:30 pm (CET)
19.12.23, 6:30 pm (CET)

Reading Circle: Political Theory in the Anthropocene

de/en

This reading circle officially dedicates itself to “Political Theory in the Anthropocene”. Our aim is to confront the canon of Political Theory with questions of the Anthropocene, think about the crisis of a certain political order of things and excavate tools and concepts from the history of political thought that can help us to wrap our heads around the conditions of the Anthropocene.
We will switch back and forth between texts from the debate about the Anthropocene and the classics of Political Theory. The reading circle is open for everybody and requires no prior knowledge and provides enough space for close-reading sessions. We hope that the 'little text, but lots of discussion' format will lead to a critical and more detailed analysis of the texts and a growing understanding of the general relation between Political Theory and the Anthropocene. We therefore specifically invite scholars with a permanent interest in the field and hope to establish a continuous format.
We will meet online – although, if possible, we will try to organize a face to face session as well. Listeners who do not want to participate in the discussion are also welcome. Depending on the group, we will discuss in English or German. We will try to make the texts available digitally to all interested parties.
Please register with tom.scheunemann@sk.hs-fulda.de or christoph-ulrich.held@sk.hs-fulda.de
First meeting: 3.11.2023, 10am (Further dates will be decided by the group on doodle)

Book:

Our next reading project will be Dipesh Chakrabarty’s controversial and critical contri-bution to the Anthropocene debate: “The Climate of History in a Plenatary Age”. Com-ing originally from postcolonial and subaltern studies, this work on the Anthropocene is for the historian a decisive turn that parts in certain ways with common beliefs in the postcolonial studies. In this way, he practices theory at its best, challenging our accustomed understanding of history, the global and the universal and setting off for new shores.
Regarding the density of the text, we will approach this book via five close reading sessions in order to do the the text justice and find ample time to grapple with its ideas and concepts. We will start with the introduction and the first chapter “Four Theses” on our first meeting at 10am on November 3rd. After that we will open a poll on doodle to find the dates for our next meetings. Please send us an e-mail to include you in the poll if you are unable to come to the first meeting.
