Titel des Promotionsprojektes: "Kakuma Refugee Camp: Analysing resettlement process in the context of forced immobility"
Forced migration of refugees is an important discourse in the current debates even at the global platforms. Events across the globe including war, economic hardships or other natural disasters have forced millions of people into leaving their homes and becoming refugees in other nations. This has required nations and organizations like UNHCR to look for solutions to assist in refugee matters. Such durable solutions include local integration, voluntary repatriation and finally resettlement.
Theoretically, resettlement is a mobility channel for refugees where they can be relocated from the camp and admitted as permanent residents of another host country. Despite, the continued positive acknowledgment that resettlement does support refugee migration there is a renewed interest of exploring this from an immobility perspective. Resettlement promises to transform the aspirations of those who want/need to move the ability to actualize this wish. However, this materialization does not happen lineally as this process involves navigating through complex phenomena that put refugees´ daily lives into dilemmas that are linked to forced immobility. If the assumption is true that resettlement does assist refugee migration, why then are refugees in Kakuma continuing to stay in camps where even access to basic needs is a challenge. This research aims to close the gap by exploring the trajectories of refugees who have spent decades in the camp and whether them applying for resettlement is a factor that forces an individual into forced immobility. The focus is on South Sudanese refugees who are the majority in the camp. These refugees have been living in a camp located in the northern part of Kenya (Kakuma refugee camp) with some for over 2 decades since 1992.
