Visiting Professorship "Global Studies"

We are happy to welcome Dr. Bekeh Ukelina from our partner university SUNY Cortland.

In the summer semester 2022, he will strengthen teaching and research at our Department and the Fulda Graduate Centre of Social Sciences. Dr. Ukelina has been invited as Visiting Professor “Global Studies”, an annual grant awarded by the DAAD-funded project “Transnational Governance and Human Rights”.

Bekeh Ukelina is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of the Centre for Gender and Intercultural Studies at the State University of New York, Cortland (SUNY Cortland). His research areas include the ideologies and practices of development in Sub-Saharan Africa with a special focus on the role of colonial exploitation and post-colonial neoliberal policies in shaping African relations with the Global North and creating conditions of underdevelopment on the continent. His most recent book, The Second Colonial Occupation: Development Planning, Agriculture, and the Legacies of British Rule in Nigeria, was published in 2017 and won the 2018 NYASA Book Award.

During his stay at Fulda UAS, Dr. Bekeh Ukelina will give public talks and contribute to the training of students and doctoral candidates. His seminars in the study programmes MAHRS, ICEUS, and BASIB and the FGCSS will explore the interrelation between development and migration, the impact of major development schemes on minorities and indigenous peoples, global history and youth movements, as well as past and present forms of oppression and resistance of people of African descent in America.

The project team “Transnational Governance and Human Rights” and the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences are looking forward to a lively exchange and inspiring collaborations.
